Remote or get out of the chair? and HiCap wondering

Posted by: PaulH on 17 August 2017

I have been happily running my system for a couple of years now and it struck me that I have never used either of the remotes (they are still in the original packing...)

So I got to wondering what percentage of people use their remote and what percentage do not.

I also started wondering whether it would be worthwhile if I replace my Flatcap with a HiCap DR.

The HiCap would need to power both the SN2 and CD5XS and yes, before I consider buying I would speak to my friendly Naim dealer and get a home demo...

Before I do that, anyone out there tried powering SN2 and CD5XS with a HiCap DR who can give an idea of any improvement or otherwise?

Thanks

A hicap can only power one item. If you are using a flatcap to power both I'd take it off the SN2. Its built in DR supply is better than that in a flatcap. The flatcap is perfect for the CD5XS. So - a free upgrade. As to whether a hicap is worthwhile on the SN2, some say yes, some say no.

I would use my remote if I could only find it!!!

Are there any strong recommendations for a remote ideal for using with a 552 (not sure if different models have the same requirements)?

Or, is there a single super duper remote which would control 552, virgin box and tv?

A widow friend of mine who uses the Naim system her husband left behind eight years ago or so told me recently that she never used the remote because it didn't seem to do much.

So I checked and the batteries were flat of course. When I put new batteries in it and showed her how the volume control knob with a little green light on her preamp would rotate when told to by the remote, she was ...let's just say ....quite surprised! (But I reckon she still won't use it.)

Thanks HH - the flatcap is only powering the CD5XS - I wouldn't even consider using it for the SN2.

NorthPole, I'm presuming there must be a super duper remote somewhere that would be able to do everything, but even then, I doubt if I would use it - not having a TV, I don't worry about that and I'm still happy to go to the Hi-Fi to press buttons etc

Unfortunately for me I live in a flat which can leave me a bit less than relaxed when playing some dynamic music where quiet patches can be exceptionally rudely interrupted by crescendos.  Not ideal I know, but a remote can be a godsend at certain such times!

I think I must be an exception. I always have the remote with me when I listen to music as I love to fiddle with the volume control. I use it frequently to change the volume when the music is playing. I usually listen to above average levels, and during the crescendos or dynamic passages I will usually turn the volume down a little before I get it up again when everything's calmer. When I listen at low levels, I will turn the volume up during the crescendos.

I use my remotes quite a lot, not just for volume but to select albums/songs.  I do have the Naim app on my tablet but it isn't always to hand or in an alert state.  Sometimes it's just quicker to use the remote to navigate the usb stick(s).

Getting out of the chair? not for me- one of the reasons I quickly retired my use of a cd player.

What is this strange thing called a 'remote control' ?

Pah ! Probably some new fangled device. Happy to use my feet, walking to and from my NAC72

When  I went from the 72 to the 82 all those years ago, I found the remote amazing, but as I used a CD player and a turntable, it didn't turn out to be useful, as I was wandering over to the stacks to change a disc/album anyway. It was useful for muting when the phone rang, but that was about it.

Now I use the turntable and a streamer, I use the app to choose music, but the volume control stays pretty much constant. I have a T-shaped room, and the racks are in one of the arms of the room, so I can't use the remote to change volume or mute without leaning forward and contortong myself to point the remote round the corner.

I never use the remote to change volume or source but obviously do use the app on my iPhone/iPad and would love a volume control there. So it makes absolutely no sense that I don't use the main remote to change volume.

I use my hdx remote, to mute, change volume, it is much better than the remote that came with my 252 many years ago. Finally I use the remote to change track on the album I am playing or  with the few playlists I have created. Sometimes I consider getting another remote so I do not have to remember to move it the few meters from my desktop with the pc, to the sofa where the serious listening takes place.

Bought an 2014 pre-loved HCDR in 2015.

Great Price, Excellent Appearance!

Bought an 2008 pre-loved 282 in 2015.

Great Price, the Appearance was Flawless, no grimy, acidic hands powering on and off the unit!

            {EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY}

I now keep the white glove stored next to my system, for powering on and off system units!

So Paul, when it comes to the remote, it is more than saving steps, and staying glued to the Chair!

The Remote is directly related to resale value, and if you choose to pass it on to your kids, they can reap the value!

Take a close look at all your powering buttons!

The White Glove!

Enjoy Your Music!

Allante93!

PS. Besides, nothing wrong with brand new looking GEAR!

Trade flatcap for ndac and add hicap later if needed this will be a much better upgrade.

Allante93,

As my power switches are on the rear, they cannot be seen.

Not the case for the volume and selector controls but I make sure I don't have sticky hands before I touch and nobody else is allowed to touch the system so I guess the resale value will still be good.

Apart from that, I was just interested to see if there are many more like me who just don't bother with the remote

Looks like I may have to add white gloves to my upgrade list....

I still have the white gloves that came with my Roksan TMS  years ago, they live in a cupboard, but I do occasionally use them for the amusement of guests. (I can't remember whether they came with the deck originally or when Touraj brought it up to close to TMS3 spec about 10 years ago.)

You got it, simple.

I usually keep her powered on, but power interruptions and brownouts, along with thunder and lightning, keeps the white gloves stationed at all times!

Allante93!

PS. Hardly noticable, but powering on and off over a period of 600 days, can leave an imprint.

Even with squeaky clean hands!

Who would touch Naim gear, with GRIMY hands! LOL.....

Why when you press the volume control, up or down, on any Naim remote there is a delay in the 552  pre-amp responding, not much but still a delay? You then repress the remote and it over compensates.  What about the 252? If you want to adjust the volume precisely you need to get up from your chair and do it by hand. Good exercise and/ or lack of finesse on my part?

Interesting reasons why people do or don't use the remote and thanks to those who replied.

My main reason is that I put a cd or LP on and listen to it at the same volume throughout so I can't see the need for me to use the remote.

I may consider streaming at some point, mainly so that I can store the lesser listened to music and have space to buy more..... At that point, I guess a remote may be used but probably just the app.

Before then, I think I need to see what a HiCap DR will do for my SN2.
