Internal HD in Uniti Core - formatting/setup problems

Posted by: Robert on 17 August 2017

On the Support page (https://www.naimaudio.com/de/p...t/uniti-core/support) I found the advice to install a - SEAGATE Pipeline 5900 2TB HDD 5900rpm SATA serial ATA - as an internal HD. So I bought one, plugged it in - but I cant format it, since Uniti Core is identifying this HD as to be a "3,86 GB / ATA ST2000VM003“. I tried everything, plugged it out and in again… but the wrong format remains. The main problem: Uniti Core is starting the formatting process, though shut it down without success - reckon the wrong identification at the very beginning is the reason. What shall I do ?

go to the topic: core 1,5 firmware update. Some members, like David Hendon, know the problem.  ( recent and active topic).   good luck

St2000vm003 is the correct seagate code for the 2 tb version of the hdd. A 4 tb version would be read as 3.86 tb , and the code would be st 4000vm003. I have the latter and the core does reluctantly format it, but it can take an agonising wait, and many re-tries. This has for some of us been a problem, and known to naim for some time. In your case, it is strange to have capacity and serial number being read as a mismatch. As Trevor suggests give the help desk a call or email.

When I tried to format my first HDD which was a Seagate 2TB, although not a Pipeline as I bought it on Phil's advice some months before Naim specified that it should be Pipeline, I found that changing from asking for it to be formatted to use WAV to format to use FLAC instantly sorted it and I was then able to tell it to do it again for WAV. I doubt that there is any difference in the formatting but anyway  doing something different was enough to unstick it.

Formatting a 2TB HDD once the Uniticore decides to do it takes only a minute or less so if you have been looking at a message telling you it's in progress for much more than that, then it's got stuck!

Anyway keep trying. I always got there eventually.

Actually my 4 tb read as 3.64 the usuable space, never sure what happens to the other 0.36, but still different to your reading. As David mentions, just keep persevering, I was trying to back up yesterday, but it failed. Had the same game this morning of reformat not working, 6 attempts and fingers crossed it will finish this time. Try not to let these niggles  put you off, because once done, the core seems to be in its element playing music.

I thought I'd go with the Samsung SSD for a change. Comments I know aren't much use to those with traditional HDDs but the Core correctly identified and formatted the SSD in no time at all. The appeal for me is a totally silent drive (my Core sits on a spare shelf on the main rack) and a barely warm case, certainly vs the Unitiserve which used to get quite warm. OK it's 1TB but that's more than enough for my needs.

I bought an SSD for the same reason and swapped out my HDD after a couple of months. But I had exactly the same hassle formatting my SSD as I had with the HDD. It did get there in the end. As you say it's quiet and it's cool. Although SSD is expensive, it's nothing compared with the rest of the system and so I agree it is the way to go if you can live with 500 GB or 1 TB.
