Naim xps 2 dr

Anybody know if the naim xps dr sound any difference from the xps2

Yup, it's better.  Don't ask me to describe the difference - I'm useless at that sort of thing and would be going by distant memory, which, being human, is notoriously unreliable on such details. However, moving from an XPS2 (just serviced) to an XPS DR on a Naim DAC was definitely a step up.

Neither the XPS2 nor even the XPS DR make any sound at all (apart from a slight humming in some cases).

They usually make what they're powering sound better, but how much depends what that is.

There are also a very few reports by some people that a DR upgrade hasn't improved the sound of their older (i.e. olive or early black box) component, but these are only occasional reports, and the reasons for this are unclear (insufficient data).

Johnny, your Naim dealer or Naim's service dept can give you an estimate of cost.

I home demoed an xps2dr a month ago on my ndx. In my opinion I lost all foot tapping Ness (sorry difficult to explain). It made things to my ears too precise too sterile. Maybe the demo unit wasn't run in perhaps having it powered up for only a week wasn't enough.   But I know that when I plugged in an original xps2 my foot started tapping again.

Really strange because my first experience of a dr power supply was when I auditioned the hicap dr on my previous 202. It was such an improvement night and day some may say over the original I bought it right away.

Perhaps I need other componant in my setup ie my supercap to be drd first I don't know. All I know is for now the xps2dr did not sit well with my equipment and my ears in my room.

True Blue - you are in good company - a DR version of the PSUs is not always better for all as some including yourself (and myself) have found. The only area where I have never heard a non DR PSU outperform a Naim DR PSU  is with the NDS and the NACs( preamps).

For me non DR PSUs are preferable on:

  • CDX2
  • CDS3
  • NDAC
  • NDX

I upgraded a couple of years back and was amazed at the difference on my CDX2. Depends on what you are after but for me the increased sparkle and detail it provided was just what I hoped for.

I'm with Richard and Alan on this.  Some years ago I had a NDAC/XPS2 fed by a CD5XS used as a transport.  I paid for the DR upgrade and it certainly improved the sound to my ears, pace Simon and True Blue.  Interestingly, the amp I was using at the time was a SN1 with HiCap and I also got the latter upgraded to DR spec.   For my tastes, this also improved the sound, indeed by a significantly greater margin than the XPS upgrade, even though the HiCap upgrade was a good deal cheaper.  I think what this goes to show is that the effectiveness of DR upgrades depends on what box the power supply is powering (my XPS DR is now on a 272), the rest of the system and your personal sound preferences.  Any chance you can hear an XPS DR in your system before shelling out?
