Office System update

Posted by: Chris Bell on 19 August 2017

A few (major) changes since my last post.  The Klipsch's are gone... they did some interesting things but were flawed and had to go back.

The Unitiqute2 is now being used solely as a preamp being fed by a NDX/UnitiServe.  Power comes from the delightful NAP100 and speakers are the amazing ProAc Tablet 10's.  No speaker this small has any business making this much bass.  It is remarkable how involving and dynamic the 10's are.  Even a recording engineer buddy of mine was impressed and helped me position for the speakers (he has remarkable listening skills).

I've also added a bunch of Vicoustic room treatments which have tamed the space.

Next step is to replace the UnitiQute2 and NDX with a 272.  I'll stop there ;-)

I filled all five of the posts with sand.  Started with the center column and after a few days of listening filled the remaining smaller posts.  Bass improved nicely overall, still can't believe the performance of the ProAc Tablet 10's.  In some ways they put my larger Titan's to shame.  Makes me wonder how the larger three way ProAc's sound?

Also put an AV Options cryo'd power cable (the basic one) on the Unitiquite.  This opened up the sound nicely... need to order more for the NDX and NAP100.  Such a great and cheap upgrade.

"In some ways they put my larger Titan's to shame".

Praise indeed Chris. A Kan for the modern age it would seem from the many positive reports I read about the Tab 10's. There are precious few good sealed-box loudspeakers designed for practical placement on the market.

Like the early (and best) Kans, Tab 10's seem to produce balanced and tuneful bass which belies their size.

Enjoy.

John.

Sublime.

As I understand it, the recommended stand is the really heavy Target one, sold by Bryston.

A friend kindly loaned me a 3.5m pair of SL cables.  Sadly too short for the home system but perfect length for the humble office system.  Result?  Crazytown. There's so much detail and bass with the Super Lumina cables, even when the amp is the humble NAP100.  Great synergy with the ProAc Tablets. This was my first time trying out SL cable and I can say it is worth the staggering price.

Coming back to this thread as I am trying to convince my wife to let me put a small system in our lounge room.

I was considering the all in one KEF LS50 Wireless however in reality the ProAc's are smaller - and will most likely sound much better on the end of a new Atom (ha ha) - which is finally ROON ready!

Do the new ProAc's really need to be on dedicated stands?  Is there anything more wife friendly which do not look like a full system - otherwise she will simply tell me to go to my listening room and listen to my Titan's!

Out of curiosity I dusted off my pair of ProAc SuperTablettes from 1985.  The new 10's are only 1.5" taller and 1" wider however they are 5 inches less deep!!

In the photo below they are sitting on a pair of plastic Starck designed Kartel stools however guess what - the lids come off and it looks like I could fill them with sand.

Does anyone have some other creative solutions which will allow me to get a system into this room and avoid dedicated stands?

Best

Hang them from the ceiling on near- invisible cords.

Alternatively if you put them on those stands, get a pair of oversized black flowerpots that the speakers will fit inside, cut out one side so the speaker front fitaps flush with the edges of the hole, then find or make narrow pots to fit inside the overside pot at the sides of the speakers, planted with some suitable plants - something trailing but not dense that will lightly cover the outside of the overside pot and speaker front.
