dsf file truncated

Posted by: DrPo on 22 August 2017

Hi, I purchased yesterday  a DSD64 album. The leading track is 33' long with size 1.3Gb. When transferred to my NAS (QNAP) the track shows a length of 7'52" (!) and indeed truncates playback at that time-stamp. After a brief investigation:

- deleting and copying the file multiple times does not resolve the problem.

- I tried the same on a different NAS (Seagate) / same exact behaviour, file shows full size but truncated duration.

- the track plays OK (all 33') on my laptop (using foobar)

- when converted to FLAC and upload on the NAS it plays OK (all 33').

- the 7'52' do not correlate by any means to an upper track size limit. In the same album there is a 0.9 Gb / 21' track which was uploaded and plays fine.

Never seen this before. From the above "facts" it seems neither a NAS problem (same issue in two different NAS's) nor a file problem (converted to FLAC works fine)...

I have emailed the company from which I purchased the album but in case some one has seen this before of has bright ideas please share!

thanks in advance,

Greg

Any ideas?

Does the file play OK via Foobar from the NAS?

Do you have other files of a similar size that play OK from the NAS?

What size is the FLAC version of the DSD file?

Just a suggestion ... but does the file have embedded artwork?  If so; try removing it.  I've heard of files (not specifically def ones though) with large embedded artwork causing problems.

Are the file extensions correct? Also remove unwanted characters _-_!?<> and the crud that file types cab have when downloaded.

Keep the naming convention simple and rename the file: track name.flac

Best

 -> this is a good idea and also contemplated it, unfortunately I cannot check it as my laptop (where I run foobar from) cannot stream on home network due to company security policy restrictions. I may be able to do so from a different PC (will try later today).

-> No, i have very few DSD files and none has such a length (due to the track duration...); so it might be a NAIM limitation?

What size is the FLAC version of the DSD file?

--> 641 Mb

yes, they are - the file plays after all (albeit truncated...)

never had such an issue - and embedded artwork on this track is max 1Mb out of 1.3GB so negligible...

Sorry but "never had such an issue [before]" doesn't mean this isn't an issue now.  Anyway its a suggestion ... try it or don't; no skin off my nose!  Its just something I've heard people having issue with in the most unlikely situations.

You asked "any ideas" ... yes thats an idea which *may* (albeit not the most likely reason) why it might not play properly.  So please don't dismiss it without trying.

(sorry if this post came across as blunt even rude)

Hi Eloise, apparently it was my response to you that came as blunt so my fault. Yes, I asked for ideas and thanks for your contribution. I spent quite some time on the one that seemed more promising (trying to set up foobar as streamer fed by the NAS on another PC where i had to configure foobar to play DSD etc still with no success...). In parallel Channel Classics have kindly re-sent me the first track which I will upload as it comes, i.e. without the embedded album art which is what you suggest.

@DRPO ... I'll accept 50/50 responsibility on the miscommunication.

Hope you get it sorted.  Just know sometimes it can be silly things which appear completely unrelated or unimportant.

Out of interest (and might help people diagnose) are you using the QNAP UPnP server or Minimserver or Assets or something else?  And when you used the file on the Seagate NAS again what UPnP server?

I have the same behaviour with Asset and Minimservier on QNAP and Twonky on Seagate. that's why my gut feeling is that the new file will not solve the issue and that there is some inherent limitation with the product (NDX) or the NAIM app but unless I can stream from the NAS on another renderer (like foobar) without issues that will remain just a hunch.

Hi DrPo,    it can't be the app as thats just a dumb reader.     I have NDX with Synology NAS & Syns own 'Media Server' UPnP  & have 50+ DSD64 albums bought from different vendors, Blue Coast, Liaison Audio, HighRes etc & have not experienced any problems.    As you get the same defect with Asset & Minimserver on QNAP & tWonky on Seagate,  that pretty much says its not in the NAS or the UPnP software.    I suspect the problem is in the .dsf file & I'm not convinced the embedded art is the problem.      Its obviously all there as it converted it all to FLAC,  so suspect a text or similar error in a line that blocks the running progress of DSD (.dsf)      I would hang this on the DSD64 file vendor.

Latest update: I finally managed to implement Mr Underhill's suggestion and played the DSF file from the NAS on another PC using foobar: plays fine (non truncation)! I have contacted NAIM support. If anyone likes Mahler and wants to potentially check the same pls contact me via PM.

Hi DrPo,

Excellent - may not be a solution but it does help narrow the focus. Look forward to hearing the resolution.
