Naim app and "rooms"

Posted by: Reading Exile on 25 August 2017

I'm now the proud owner of a Muso and a Muso Qb, but having problems with the app. I can stream from spotify and itunes to both devices, so I'm confident the network works. However the app is another thing altogether. Have installed app on an android phone as well as an iphone and ipad; "find my rooms" on the ipad manages to find either the Muso OR the Qb, not both, and "find my rooms" on either phone replies with "no rooms found"

Very frustrating as the sound is wonderful, but I can't control anything via the app !

ANy ideas /suggestions gatefully received

Look at the settings of you WiFi Access point / broadband router:  It's probably blocking SSDP (the UPnP discovery protocol).

Look at the help files to see how to enable DLNA and UPnP.  You may also have to turn off IGMP snooping to make it reliable.

Also make sure WiFi passkey and your network passwords are strong (min 8 characters mix of Uppercase, Lowercase, Numerics and Special characters (where permitted); if you can only use Alpha characters then min 10 characters, and don't use words).

I'm not sure how much you know about this so forgive me if you do know already. You need a good strong wifi signal and wired is better, but you could move the Qb and muso closer to your router to get it all working.  And the app has to be on the same network as the muso and Qb, which means the same wireless network (although it's ok to spread across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz if you have a hub or router that uses both.)

i don't know the Android app, but with the IOS app once it's decided that it can't find the rooms it can be hard persuading it to look again. One easy way is to close the Naim app by double clicking the home button swiping the app upwards single clicking the home button and then select the app again.

All Huge's suggestions are right but if you have a normal commercial router you shouldn't have to play with it like that to get it to work. What router is it?

It's a 1 year old virgin superfast jobbie and signal strength is good. I can find a room occasionally: I think signal strength may be an issue, putting the ipad near the router has an effect and rooms are found (which is a first). I need to experiment more......

thank you for the help

You don't need to mess around with the settings of a one year old VM Superhub. It will all be about the signal strength of the wifi I think.

Rebooting the superhub is probably a good plan too.

It's likely the superhub/naim mix. Naim stuff just can't cope with Virgin routers very well. I had the self same issue with Mu-so and 272.

So, I put superhub in modem mode, added my Asus router (which is superior to Virgin router in so many ways) and all is fine.

I'm afraid you've just wondered in to the world of 'tricky' that is naim streaming, app etc. It's not always plug 'n' play I'm sorry to say. Though things have improved with time.

I must say my Virgin Media Superhub 2ac works ok without any need for changing settings etc. I'm not saying that a separate router wouldn't be fine, but it shouldn't be necessary. But it is quite a good idea to have a switch like a Netgear GS105 between the Naim kit and the Superhub and this is cheap and easy to do. It means the Superhub doesn't have to get involved in normal traffic between Naim streamers and a NAS or server.

Wiring streamers rather than wifi is a good idea, especially during setup as it moves a big area of uncertainty at the outset.

David, I think many issues arise because of defficiencies / interoperability matters with bundled wifi access points that are bolted onto some  ISP and third party off the shelf routers... and of course you need wifi to control the Naim app.

After a weekend of experimenting, I am at Tranquility Base. Setting up a powerline arrangement (using TP-LINK jobbies) and plugging each Muso into that solves all connection problems. My laptop is connected via ethernet to the router so, as I have to plug a Muso into a power socket anyway, why not use a powerline?

Of course. All I saying is that I think recent VM superhubs are pretty reasonable and don't routinely need tweaking. Rather in the way you say BT HH6s are pretty ok.

No indeed, my point was other than throughput, if there an issue with wifi between mmedia server  and streamer then same issue will most likely affect Naim app to streamer
