MacOS Sierra Mail and Yahoo
Posted by: Dungassin on 28 August 2017
Just spent a frustrating couple of days sorting out a problem with Apple Mail on my iMac. I have a BTinternet account, which is (of course) basically Yahoo. For the last couple of years there has been no problem, but on Saturday I logged in to print off an email which SWMBO had forwarded to me. Lo and behold, Mail says password invalid etc. So, I reentered the PW, which didn't cure the problem. Checked on my iPhone and iPad - current emails OK. Could still log in to my BTinternet emails via their website, but that is cumbersome to say the least ...
So, after trying almost everything else I could find on t'interweb about Mail problems with no cure appearing, I thought I was having to go ahead with the faff of doing the Mac version of 'reinstall Windows' (i.e. erase and reinstall MacOS)
Then I came across the following solution : Delete the Yahoo Mail Account from Mac Mail. Quit Mail. Set up a new email account using 'other', but enter my BTinternet email address and password. This cured the problem! Now the little Internet Accounts window says BTinternet, not Yahoo.
Is this problem just one for Yahoo users or does it happen with other email clients? Perhaps it's just something to do with the BTinternet version of Yahoo?
Interestin Dungassin - I've never been able to gert my BT Yahoo account to work properly with Apple Mail at all! I've been using the webmail version all the time; which as you say, is a complete faff.
I'm gonna give your suggestion a go - thanks!
I do find the OSX mail client a bit temperamental, especially when you change mail account settings... you sometimes need to pull out the logs and see what it is actually sending. Perseverance is usually key and reinstalling the OSX mail account settings always works but is a complete faff. I have my BT mail working fine on my iMac.. eventually, but Mrs SinS seems to have some real mares with OSX mail on her MacBook Air from time to time...
i'm not sure this is an Apple Mail problem, in the last month I've had similar issues with BT (Yahoo) on my Win-10. I don't use MS (Win-10) Mail sync'd to BT but go direct to 'My BT Mail' via a one touch bookmark button on Google Chrome. I've had the same problems happened twice in a month now & it sounds remarkably similar faffing to what you've had. I've fixed it each time but TBH I'm not really sure what I did exactly (step by step), first time I changed my password & that did not actually fix it, but on both occasions I eventually arrived at a screen that facilitated BT/Yahoo sending a verification code to another e-mail address (or mobile phone). Annoyingly I could log on to Mrs Mike's email from my laptop & I could also log on to my email from her laptop. I have a feeling this might be a BT issue.

The only aleration Inhad made was when I changed my password some months ago following a message from Yahoo. Worked fine for a long time until the recent hiccup (hiccough?)
Mike, I too think that it might be a BT problem as most of the things I found on the net mentioned them.

I can't help but to offer sympathy. No email client I have ever used on a computer has been any good for me. I learnt long ago to just use web-mail services. The Outlook client software works OK on my work computers, but that's maintained by professionals. I'm simply too clueless to get local clients to work on my personal computer. I have also learnt to NEVER use the email service offered by your internet provider.
Outlook is a very competent mail package whether talking to an Exchange server or to a POP3 server. Unfortunately it's now only available in the more expensive versions of Microsoft Orifice.
The only other mail client that I've found to be more reliable than my ISP's mail servers is Mozilla Thunderbird. One of the advantages is that it has a massive and very active online community forum, where, so far, I've found every answer I've needed. Mainly because someone else has already found a solution to any issue (e.g. ISP connectivity) that I've encountered.

I've bought a couple of licenses of Office Professional 2010 where it is included. Older versions of Office can legally be found and are as useful as the newer versions in my experience (not being an advanced user). Think that I payed 38 Euros last time.
Spark (a free email client) is a hugely popular app and strongly recommended by Apple themselves.

Yahoo upgraded their security making it incompatible with older versions of Apple Mail. The version included with Sierra work fine with yahoo.
I'm using Sierra, and it was working fine. Then it wasn't, but now I've got it back again by the means I already described.
I thought Yahoo was now part of the Verizon group, and not BTinternet.

BT piggyback on Yahoo service
I stopped using Apple Mail back in 2004 when Google Mail Beta first came out and never looked back as Apple Mail is slow and does not work well with Google Mail, and it is very quirky.
My favorite email clients on a Mac is Air Mail and Spark, and I could not make my mind to choose which one is the default. They are good, slick, fast, and work very well with any email system.
