SL2 tweeter - need for matched pair?

Posted by: silklee on 28 August 2017

Just a couple of days ago, noticed that there is no sound coming from one of my SL2 tweeters. Will be seeking help from my dealer to diagnose if its has blown or something else.

In any case, if I need to replace the tweeters, should I replace them as a 'matched pair' or is it fine to replace just the spoilt one.

Did some searches and found comments that it might be worthwhile going for a matched pair.

However, I also emailed Naim UK, but they replied that it is fine just to replace one. While Naim UK still have the tweeters available, I am checking if they still have 'matched pairs' in stock.

Any thoughts?

I think it's good you went for the pair. Hopefully you'll enjoy the results without concern for 'matching' or 'burn-in' creeping into your psyche. Cheers.

That's good news. The idea of shaking the tweeter to make it work made me smile - hopefully they will now me more reliable and they should sound even better. It's certainly good to know that replacements can be obtained for a reasonable price.

Had a new matched pair in my SL2s about 5 years ago. One had failed and it was clear that they'd had some previous "attention". Run in took several months and surprised me how much it improved the quality of the bass.

I had a similar episode yesterday when the left tweeter of my DBLs (that are the same, I believe, as the SL2's) started to emit a distorted sound at the lower HFs; I was playing Heroes from Peter Gabriel's Scratch My Back album.

It didn't (apparently) happen when I switched song and after a while I switched back to the Heroes song again to confirm but I did not hear it...  I am positive I heard clear distortion however the first time. Is this a first sign of a tweeter failing ? Anyone else experience intermittent distortion as such ?

Many thanks

Stefano

my experience too -- and the improvement is quite emphatic, even though mine are not yet fully run-in ... (a couple of weeks in for one and a few days for the other)

enjoy
