Uniti Atom Front Display - Is this normal?
Posted by: Alley Cat on 30 August 2017
I've had it just under 2 weeks.
Several times when I wake it via the Naim App and use Chromecast built-in to ply Qobuz, the front display seems to have a corrupted display - I can only describe it as blurred grey bands that sometime fade in and out.
I cannot get the home menu or other information to display without turning it off via the remote then on again.
So is this a hardware issue with display or a firmware bug - I can't see it's a feature.
Now perhaps I'll be told to always turn it on via the remote, but I may not have that to hand but do have the iPhone running Naim app.
I can't see a proper manual for this device on the Naim support pages either, only the Quick Start Guide.
Oddly when I initially turned it on and paired the remote it never went through a setup routine, should it have?
There isn't a printed manual but there is lots of information if you look for the online support wizard.
Having said that, it sounds like a hardware fault to me and I think you should talk to your dealer. (You could also ring Naim technical support.)

I've never seen it change the display either when I'm in close proximity. It may be where it's placed but as you say will perhaps check with dealer.
Assume there's no easy way to post a pic without embedding one from ImageShack or similar?
No mechanism to upload one from the desktop for example?
That's not right Alley. The dealer should check it and replace it. Under 14 days that should be classed as DOA. Mine don't do that and neither does my mates.
All the best.

There are instructions on posting a pic in the FAQ bit of the forum, but the simple answer to your question is "no there isn't". Obviously there are different photo hosting options.

Thanks I searched for posting pics and saw lots of ImageShack references but will take a look at the FAQ.
I have an idea....
It's the most recent but one topic in the forum room called Frequently Asked Questions. Posting by Richard Dane from June 2016.

Alley Cat,
have you been in contact with Naim support on this?

I tried the specific Muso/Uniti number in the Contacts page but I was in a queue for several minutes and rand the dealer instead (they were engaged earlier). Dealer didn't think it sounded right at all and would forward my image to Naim.
Is there a reason Uniti/Muso users get a different tech support number - manufacturing/support handled by a different company perhaps?
Maybe I should try the 01722 426600 number above.

Interesting - image failed to display for you but I now know why! Don't ask!
Try again:
I bet Naim tell your dealer to swap it out.....
.....but it's interesting to see. I still reckon it's a hardware thing.
Glad you sorted out the image posting. Did you find the on line support stuff for the Atom?

I mentioned it to Phil via email. He's awaiting your e-mail contact. He's never seen or heard of this before but reckons it may well be physical rather than software.

So Alley Cat that's support@naimaudio.com rather than any Uniti support email address. And address to Phil Harris.....

Many thanks - I did send details to that e-mail address earlier.
I've forwarded this email/details to Phil too.
When you say wake does your screen turn off while playing? My Nova screen is always on while playing.
From standby I usually press the power button, not had any issues. Ive never seen the screen do anything with gesture but if you wave your hand over the volume dial it lights up...
Hi Leon, no I mean wake from standby which is 30 mins idle I think by default on the Atom.
So pressing power button or using Remote to bring out of standby the display works ok, but if I wake from standby over the network using Naim app (I'm often sat 20 feet away working at the laptop) on iPhone I get no text/images/menus just darkness or like pic above.
No one else seems to have seen this and Phil has e-mailed me back from support suggesting I talk to the dealer about a replacement as it's likely to be faulty.
While the display is not essential in use, if this is some kind of hardware fault you'd have to wonder if there were other underlying problems waiting to show up down the line or causing subtle audio issues.

In theory if artwork is being displayed and you move in close proximity to the unit it should change to show info about current track playing.
My screen does nothing by waving in front of the display. I have asked a couple of questions to Naim directly regarding the unit. A couple of issues I have currently:
AFAIK it's a proximity sensor that changes from cover art (assuming it's showing) to track data - no hand waving just get close enough to the unit - away from home so can't check if it changes as the volume backlight does or separately.
With regard to the App issues I can't test either with only a single Naim streamer but would assume it should work as you expect it to to allow proper multi-room, unless Nova is using a newer multiroom protocol which is not seen but the older units whereas the older protocol they use is still recognised on the Nova - conjecture of course.
I assume you've restarted/power cycled all devices including the router and restarted the device running the Naim app.
Probably won't help but deleting and reinstalling the Naim app would probably check there's no corruption there.
I'd consider a factory reset from Settings too in case there's a configuration with input/Tidal sources being displayed.
With regard to point 4 it would be nice to be able to select an artwork (own, album or Naim screenart) to display permanently/default to if none available - I really wish using Chromecast for example that I could have the new 'spectral' Uniti art showing not a rather boring pair of quavers. Hopefull this would be something addressabel in future software updates.
Alley cat you are quite correct the proximity sensor is changing from cover art to track info. I have to be fairly close for it to work whereas the volume lights come on from quite a distance away.
I've cycled all devices but I cannot multiroom from the nova but all others work fine..
Best regards
Leon
