No more "meta.naim" files – problem or solution?

Posted by: Lorenz on 31 August 2017

Hello,

after a longer journey through many issues with my faulty Uniti Core Naim has replaced the device with a new one. Good news: it starts, restarts, has noch clicking noise any more and imports all of my music without and issue.

One thing I ran into: in the past the core generated a file called "meta.naim" within any album folder during (or right after) import of music. For example 123 albums result in 123 files "meta.naim" in 123 album folders.

Now there is NO "meta.naim" file anymore.

Is this good? Is this bad?

Can't find any information on this in the release notes or on the forum (except other threads stating that the "meta.naim" file is normal).

BTW my old Core was on FW1.4 when it went back to Naim and the new Core is on FW1.5.

Best,  Lorenz

I suspect that this isn't a good thing or a bad thing but just a thing.

So far as I know, meta.naim files are where Naim store user metadata edits and perhaps the latest firmware doesn't add a file at ripping or import but only on metadata editing? You could test this hypothesis by using the app to alter the metadata on a rip and see whether a meta.naim file is created when you save the edit. I can't believe that Naim has abandoned them altogether as st least for WAV it needs a way to keep user metadata edits.

Anyway I am glad to hear that it works ok. As you no doubt know, firmware 1.5 was released a couple of weeks back, so if it has just come back from Naim, one would expect it to be on 1.5.

Or it could just add the metadata to the WAV file itself, Wav files have had support for basic metadata via the INFO chunk since almost the beginning, and now for many years they have full metadata support via an ID3 chunk (just like mp3s, aiff, dsf ecetera). Is Naim ever going to properly support Wav metadata ?

Don't forget that Naim also has to support imports from legacy servers (eg HDX and US) and also serve files that will have been ripped originally on a Naim server and now sits on a NAS. So changing the way they store metadata is more complex that it might seem at first sight.

Sorry for my late answer. Wasn't near the Core for some days...

David's input may be part of the solution/promlem.

None of the imports from my NAS in the Downloads folder gets and a "meta.naim" or "rip.naim" file in the album folder. Editing of meta-data using the Naim app is unavailable.

All of the CD-RIPs will feature "meta.naim" or "rip.naim" files in the album folder – editing the meta-data using the Naim app is available.

Revised question is easy: normal behaviour? As  far as I recall from the old (faulty) Core even the NAS-imports (using the Naim app – not syncing via Mac/PC) lead ate least to the "meta.naim" file and the ability to edit meta-data. Hopefully my memory s not fooling me...
