Using multiple iPad/iPhones as controllers
Posted by: Wayne Collins on 01 September 2017
Only 12 hours into ownership but an early question for anyone who may have had the same and solved it.
I have 1 iPad working as a controller with Naim app but cannot seem to get any of 3 other apple devices to see the Atom at all.
Is the Atom limited to a single device which it somehow recognises and locks all others out?
For the old streamers only one device can be connected at the same time, but this should not be the case for the new streamers, and that is told by Naim. Unfortunately I cannot check this.

I have no experience of the Atom per se, but I use an NDS which I am able to control from either of two iPads or two iPhones, all probably running different versions of the n-stream app. It is usually necessary to select the unit (or 'room' as Naim Audio calls it) when using an alternative device.
I've controlled Atom from iPad Air and iPhone 6. I have many other iOS devices I can test with but am away from home for the weekend.
Not sure if you mean you're trying to control via 2 iOS devices simultaneously, something I've not consciously tried.
The question is can 2 iOS devices connect to the Atom or Nova via the app AT the same time?
with the classic streamers you can't - it will be interesting to hear if in the new architecture this limitation is removed - although I can understand why Naim might not want to do this as it could start to use more resources than ideal on the streamer.
Many thanks all for responding.
Does look like the Atom likes to cling to one device. I can get it to swap but only by turning the other 'controller' off. Takes a while to get the 'new controller' to take over as well.
Still seeming to get stuck in the app and need to use the Naim remote to rescue me. Going to try to get it to forget my Tidal login this eve to take advantage of 3m free. Only signed up last Sun in prep for Atom but didn't know about offer!
All going well really, listening to Naim Radio for 1st time just now and planning a Nas strategy but likely to run with a HD via USB until I make my mind up.
It would be worth calling Naim support about this. With the classic streamers you can only have one IOS device active at a time, but swapping idevice S involves simply putting the one you want to stop on standby and selecting the new one. Takes a couple of seconds or so. You don't need to touch a remote ever.

Wouldn't 'stay connected' settin cause this?
I appreciate the question is about the Atom rather than the Nova however my experience may be useful (although bear in mind I received my Nova only yesterday so am still learning!). I'm able to access the Nova with multiple iOS devices at the same timeāand, incidentally, play one work in the living room (where the Nova lives), streamed from the NAS, and a different one on the Mu-so in a bedroom (also streamed from the NAS, at the same time).
Because of the constraints of living in a flat I have only in-wall B&W Signature 8NT speakers with back boxes but the Nova is playing exquisite classical music with a most wonderful open and effortless sound (ripped CDs and many 96bit/192kHz downloads). It's very difficult to stop listening!

Stay connected is the issue, uncheck it and I have what I use the main remote (iPod touch), but the iP7 and iPad works just as well.

The new uniti series is designed to allow multiple control devices to connect at the same time.
Even if you had an older uniti, then the app running on your other devices would still at least be able to see the uniti under 'find my rooms', even though you wouldn't be able to connect more than one device to it.
It sounds to me like you're having app discovery issues due to problems with your router.
See the sticky thread at the top of the streaming forum page about Spotify connect and app discovery problems from Phil Harris.

This was announced a while back, but has anyone tried it and found that it actually does work? It was also possible with N-Serve, so anyone with an HDX or Unitiserve/SPDIF would have this functionality too. Just not the "legacy" streamers that most of us are still using.
Yes it works, I have had 2 devices connected to more than 1 atom. Installed 3 at a client's house the other day with a colleague and we were skipping between all units while stress testing the network, and more than once we were both connected to the same box.
Thanks JS, that's good to know.
