Looking for streaming audion advice

Posted by: Morgs on 05 September 2017

This may seem like a newbie question but here goes. My primary system is a NAC282 with Linn LP12 and CDX as the main inputs. I also have a Naim MuSo in another room I use for stream audio from a Synology NAS. I want to be able to stream the FLAC files I have on the NAS to the Naim system but not sure how to do this. I was looking at buying a used Naim DAC but not sure what to use to stream the data from Synology to DAC. I have been looking at the new Uniti components but again not sure which option makes most sense.

Any ideas, suggestions, experience to share?

Thanks!

Don't worry, Morgs, we're here to help!

With the system you have, one simple route is a Naim streamer (ND5 XS or, better, NDX), which will act as another source and connect to your 282. Both have an internal DAC; both will read the music from your NAS (preferably via an ethernet cable between your router and whichever streamer you choose, alternatively via wifi) and play it; both are excellent.

Lots of other methods, but this is worth looking at.

Thanks for the fast response. So an external DAC, other than for sound quality improvements, is not required?

Correct.

Naim DACs are seen as upgrades to primiary digital sources like CD playes and streamers.

Given you already have 282 and CDX, I would recommend an NDX. If purchasing new is not your cup of tea, there should be some pre-loved ones on the market.

Agree with Adam.

Thanks to everyone that responded. After brief consideration of NAC272 now on the hunt for a lightly used NDX.

Good decision!
