NAC282 "static" when using volume/balance controls

Good morning from sunny southern California. I recently moved from Florida to California and had my stereo in storage for about 9 months while our new home was completed. I recently put everything together and I now have a problem which I think is linked to my Pre Amp. My system setup is NAC 282/NAP250 -> SBLs - Inputs CDX2/XPS and Linn LP12 + Armageddon. There is a static/crackle on both channels when I use either the volume or balance controls. There is also occasional "static" on the left channel when I first play something but this seems to diminish after listening for a while.

Any ideas what this might be. Does the 282 need a service? Anything else I should look at?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Morgan,

I had the same problem on my 252. Sent it to Naim for a service and they replaced the volume pot inclusive of the service cost. Wonderful service if you ask me.

Before you do that though, press mute and give them a few full rotations in case it clears up.

Morgs, before contacting Naim US service I would switch off and careful make and re-make all the connections on SNAICs, interconnects etc.. and see whether that fixes things.

It could be dirt in the pot... if it doesn't clear by wiping the pot severeal times from end to end, then a service may loom. There are special sprays specifically for cleaning pots, but unless you know what you are doing might be best to use a pro.

I experienced the same thing with my NAC 202 few years ago. There was intermittent static sound from the speakers when the music was playing or when it's completely quiet ie. no music playing. It turned out to be a dirty pot. After the pot was cleaned the static sound was completely gone. I had someone do it for me as I am quite hopeless at these things.
