A nice find

My mother in law wanted her attic clearing out at the weekend. A couple of boxes came down and these were inside.

Loft find

Thorens TD160 & Trio KA-4002

A complete surprise as no one knew what they were or where they were from. My father in law died over 10 years ago and he wasn't interested in hi-fi so no clues there. The units seem to be in decent condition, apart from 30 + years of dust collection from the loft and a grazed turntable lid. Anyway - what to do next. Are they worth spending time and money on refurbishment or not worth the effort. I know there's interest in vintage hi-fi and the TD160 can fetch a decent price on Fleabay but I'm tempted to have a go myself for a 2nd "vintage" system. I think the turntable is worth doing but any thoughts on the amp ? Was it a decent one in its day ?

Here she is on her first test run and sounding rather good. And looking just as nice as the LP12.

td160

  • New mains cable
  • New phono leads
  • Bearing check & oil change
  • New AT95E
  • New Thakker belt
  • New Rega felt mat
  • New Rega Fono Mini

Now it's complete, my daughter is eyeing it up. I've promised her that she can have it when she finishes Uni. In the meantime I've got a couple of hundred LP's to digitise. The Fono is a great piece of kit with its USB interface. Now I just need to convince my wife that two turntables are better than one.

The Trio amp benefited from its clean up. The crackle on the pots has been eliminated so tomorrow I will try it with the TD160.

PS. Anyone here going to the Uniti Roadshow at Ceritech Audio on 21st Oct ?
