Recapping with possible DR upgrade (vs. Super Lumina)

Posted by: michael1702 on 07 September 2017

Time might have come for recapping my NAP250.2, Supercap and/or XPS2 (which powers the nDAC). Which also might be an opportunity to upgrade them to DR.

In which order would you recap? What would make the biggest difference?

Same for DR upgrade.

Or should I go for Super Lumina into my Neat speaker instead of a DR upgrade?

I'd love to hear your suggestions! Thanks a lot!

I would personally go DR before SL. And, if my choice it would be 250 first, then SC. Reverse trend to the source first mantra but the 250 Dr upgrade is (90% of the time) heralded a 'game changer', SC often quoted significant upgrade and XPS DR better. In each case there are some that prefer non DR, but less so with the 250. Once these are done audition SL to determine whether it is worth the investment in your system in your room to your ears

SL before DR

you have to recap the 250.2 first as the capacitors inside the power amp have the most heavy load.

You mean before moving to SL or before recapping the others?

Btw. Does a DR upgrade include recapping?

Eh?  You send off your 250 first to have it recapped, buy SL and then send your 250 to have it DR'd?.... Thats madness.

I say forget cables for now and at least get the 250 serviced and up to latest DR spec.

A service of the NAP250 at around 8-10 years is pretty well mandatory as it's a regulated amp. performance drops off considerably beyond this time, much more do than the unregulated amps in my experience.

You get a discount on a service if you have it done at the same time as a DR upgrade.

It's worth reiterating that a service is much more than just a "re-cap", particularly when it comes to a regulated amp like the NAP250.

Thank you all for your feedback!

I decided to order the DR upgrade for my NAP250. Let's hear!
