JRiver

Hi all. Bit of a beginner question I'm afraid. On verge of buying a used Uniti 2. My digital library is on a laptop that I manage using JRiver (very happy with software) and I use JRemote app on my IPad wired into existing amp. If I buy the Uniti 2 can I continue using JRiver and JRemote but connect via wifi to the Uniti ? All advice is helpful. Thanks Ian.
What you need is a UPnP server on your computer - I'm not familiar with JRiver, but I don't think it can do this. Have a look at Minimserver or Asset. The Uniti has its own control app, which controls all inputs, including UPnP, radio, Tidal, etc. as well as volume and other controls.
JRiver can certainly be used in conjunction with the Uniti as it is a UPnP software server. The drawback of course is that you need to have your laptop computer powered up to run JRiver but it will certainly be able to serve your music files over your network.
Optimally, you should try to have the Uniti connected by ethernet cable if at all possible.
Also, JRiver will show as a UPnP server on the naim app should you decide to load it to your iPad in addition to the JRemote app.

Thanks for the correction! That makes life easier for the OP, but he will still need to use the Naim app, as JRiver presumably cannot control a Naim streamer.
Hi Chris,
JRemote app will work since the app communicates with the UPnP server rather than directly with the streamer although, of course, it would not be able to control the amp volume etc. for which the naim app or Uniti's remote would be needed.

Yes. I use JRiver on a mac into my NDX via Upnp. You will not want to use the JRiver remote since the Naim app is much better. However, you can still use the JRiver if you want.
You need to setup the UPNP services on JRiver but that is very easy and straightforward.
I can confirm jremote is a pretty good control point for UPNP what that means is you can use it to play music from jriver to your uniti (And indeed squeezeboxes and airplay
All round I have a lot of respect for the pc version of jRiver.
Great responses and very helpful - thanks everyone. Certainly seems that I can continue with JRiver if I chose to.
By the way I've just posted another question separately on this forum about hardware and a Uniti 2. Advice would be most appreciated. Cheers all.

SJ - love that pic of Roger ... What a player ...
I have to disagree with the post that says the Naim App is better than JRiver. In my system JRiver as a DLNA controller (and any other DLNA software I use come to that) detects the my 272 immediately without any delays/drop outs , Room Not Found errors, rotating circles or other "discovery" problems .
No need even to set up JRiver as a DLNA server, when I upgraded from a DAC V1 to the 272, all that was necessary was to tick the Tools->Options->Media Network>Enable DLNA and the Media Network>Advanced->DLNA Controller boxes in JRiver. The 272 appears as an output device just like any attached device and you can stream straight from your JRiver library. The Naim appears in the Gizmo remote too, no waiting, no other changes whatsoever.
I assume here that the Uniti 2 now works as a DLNA Renderer, I know there used to be problems with early Naim streamers.
jriver is an good platform and well worth the money, since version 18/19 all the bugs have been sorted 10/10 I rip all cd with it
/no metadata probs either ,don't care for app. much.
I should add that as well as using JRiver as a DLNA controller, taking 10seconds to change an existing configuration to simply "push" music to a Naim streamer, it is possible to simultaneously set up the same JRiver installation as a DLNA server and use the Naim App if that is what you want to do.

I've used both and the ability to adjust the volume via the Naim app makes it a clear winner.
I have no problems adjusting the Naim's volume via JRiver, thats standard DLNA functionality, the only obvious functionality missing is seeking to a given time where the DLNA standards are a little hazy/ sometimes not implemented.

Oh... So is that adjusting the volume on the preamp or just adjusting the volume of the file? I can adjust the volume to my ND5 via JRemote even though it is not a preamp.

On the 272 it is most definitely the preamp volume being controlled, as the JRiver value for volume on the slider bar (0-99) is automatically displayed on the 272 when the volume is adjusted in JRiver. Also the JRiver volume level automatically adjusts to the independent headphone volume when headphones are plugged into the 272.
Just a thought on the JRiver Media Network screen, try setting audio conversion under client options to don't convert audio. Otherwise I suspect that as the firmware in the ND5 is the same as preamps, that it actually includes volume control which cannot be accessed by Naim controllers on the ND5, but as a"feature" can be accessed by DLNA controllers. It's quite common in electronics for all models to have the same software, with some functions blocked in cheaper models.
