Buffer or duffer

Posted by: Simon C on 09 September 2017

Good evening guys (gender inclusive),

I've just downloaded my first 24/96 music and copied it onto my NAS.

I'm playing this through a wired Ethernet network to an Oppo 205 universal player then to Naim stuff.

Up until now, when playing 16/44 or 24/44 audio the system works pretty well with approx 3-5 seconds delay when changing tracks. However these 24/96 tracks cause nearly a minute of silence between tracks. Now I'm a patient kind of guy but a minute silence is sorta awkward and  I almost feel compelled to actually talk to my partner. I'm sure you see my dilemma.

The Oppo tells me it is buffering between tracks. Is this a normal buffer delay?  Is the buffering more likely to be because the Oppo can't accept   such a monumental rate of data, the QNAP 251A NAS can't spit the data out fast enough or that the person who set it up is a bit of a duffer?

I'm using native QNAP Upnp server (I hope that's the right terminology) on the NAS. Would a change to Asset or similar be advisable? Control is with mconnectHD or QNAP's own or Oppo's own: different apps makes no difference to the buffer time.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose would be gratefully received. Failing that, suggestions on conversation topics would be welcome. Two tracks in and my partner is already bored with my inane chatter. No nookey tonight  :-/

There may be two issues at hand

1. Network performance may be causing some issues (less likely)

2. UPnP software is not coping well. If I recall QNAP came with a pre-installed Twonky. I disabled mine, and installed a copy of Minimserver.

I agree with Adam re tWonkey.  You say you would like to install Asset,  YES thats the one to go for.  I would go for it in a flash if was formally supported on my Synology NAS.

Thanks guys,

i think the network infrastructure is ok. I can stream 1080 TV via Amazon without issues and I assume that creates more data traffic than hi-res audio(?).

I've not seen a mention of Twonky on setup screens or in the QNAP manual but I quests QNAP could be using it with a corporate front end. I'll see if I can put Asset on in place of,what's there. The ability to use Asset was the deciding factor when choosing between QNAP/Synology. NASs.
