Internet tuner
Posted by: Perol on 10 September 2017
I have been using my Unitiqute as preamp in a TV setup
Wireless Internet radio from UQ has been a positive experience with lots of use
Now, I'm replacing this TV setup with other kit and the UQ is sold on
The other kit does not provide radio
I wonder if its possible to buy separate internet radio tuners in similar quality ?
And without the wasted electronics in UQ that I didn't use
I'd avoid using a pc and I don' t need other streaming facilities apart from internet radio
Are there such wireless tuners, in good quality, available on the market ?
Assuming we're allowed to mention them, there are a few. Try Onkyo 6170. The Pioneer streamers also have good ituner management. You're always going to get more than you need in this department. For a cheap option...Noxon A110. I have no experience of using this..... best into a DAC, I expect.
I've been thinking about this post FM. I'm wondering if the answer might be a ND5?

Please don't mention 'post FM'; it's not something us NAT01 users like to think about!
Whatever, I think an NDS might be slight overkill, given that the OP did state that he didn't need streaming facilities other than iRadio.

There isn't much difference between web radio streaming and local streaming... and so to get the best from it you need the best streamer you can get. Now currently most web radio is lossy, but there are now starting to appear lossless FLAC web radio such as the trial from the BBC for Radio3, and that sounds incredibly good and is comparable to local streaming...However currently Naim streamers can't handle the FLAC mime type within MPEG-DASH in ISO BMFF format... which is what the BBC uses and has now been published as part of the FLAC standard, so one needs to use a transcoder such as MinimServer.

That is ND5, not NDS. But a very easy mistake to make.
I think the ND5 with iRadio could be a good option, come the day.
You could also explore streaming with a ND5, Lindsay.

Sorry, my mistake. I misread it. I often get these confused when reading on my mini iPad.
I know someone who has a Denon he uses for webradio & some basic local streaming from PC & a USB. Its a slim full width black case. Just looked at Denon www & if its the same model its £299 from the rain forest.
Many thanks for input
As I don't stream a ND5 or anything above seem quite silly, indeed if internet radio is on level or thereabout with UQ ?
UQ had excellent internet radio performance and not really interested in anything lower if thats the risk ?
Ok it is not FM quality but I'm covered there in another setup with my Nat03.
I feared Onkyo, Denon and the consumer alike, have no idea how its gonna work or perform, maybe I should just keep the UQ, a bit expensive for internet radio duties only if you ask me..well there's allways the kitchen replacing the Ruark R1
Bluesound node 1 or 2. You may be able to pick up a bluesound 1 for a very resonable price. It is surprisingly good even for the price asked for a new v 2.
As I stated in another thread I'm considering getting rid of my ND5XS and so have been listening to internet radio via Macbook/USB-Spdif/Chord 2Qute and it sounds better than a bare ND5XS and not far off ND5XS into the 2Qute.
An ND5XS at over a 1000 pounds used is a very expensive iTuner.

Great suggestion
Found one for €200
No idea how it function but maybe I should just jump ?
Can I control it via smartphone or does it have a display ?
Will try reading more about it

I've explored streaming..............
I use my squeezebox touch for internet radio - simple to set up and use (including smartphone control) and can be found pre loved for about £100. The only issue is that they are getting on in age and I'm not sure about their inbuilt obselescence...

The node 1 first generation does not have a display, and I do not think the node 2 current version has one. There are iOS, android and a Windows app to control it, and most likely also a mac app, so more control options than many other streamers. They use TuneIN to get the radio channels, and they like naime has the 320 kbps Radio Paradise stream.
If it is a node 2 I would buy it, I am sure it can be sold on without a los for that price.

Its a #2 Claus
I have no idea what tunein is and tbh I'm a novice with this technologi, app's and the like, I do know my smartphone is a Huawei P9 lite though
All I want is to hear internet radio connected to an intg amp without using a pc
We have a router in house and I do know how to connect to this, as I did that with my UQ
TuneIn is the service where the Node gets the radio shows and podcasts from. Naim streamers and servers use vtuner.com. They are more or less the same, just different ways of giving you control over radiostations and podcasts.

Yes, go to HiFiShark and look for a Squeezebox, either Classic or Touch. better a Touch. There's another forum with a certain movement of such devices.

Thanks Max, will look out for one
Sonos Connect. I use one with an old Sansui Eight receiver, and it works fine for streaming just about anything. Also has digital output, so sound quality can be upgraded using an external dac. Very easy to set up and use.

Can SB run radio without the server software?

Well unless you can find one below 200 euros I will still go for the Node 2. For the same price I would prefer Bluesound over Sonos.
I can get a used Node 1 at €200, SB Touch €100
Will they perform internet radio as good as a UQ ?

I have not compared all of these. However the Node is in active development and you may like to use some of its streaming capabilities in the future. Both digital and analogue out is very good especially for the price. I was a bit chocked when I connected the analogue out of my node 1 to my 252, comparing it to ns01 connected to ndac with 555.

And I just saw you wrote Node 1 not 2. I think 200 euros is close to asking to much for a Node 1.

Doesn't Chromecast Audio do internet radio? If it does, this seems to be one of the cheapest options - and you just use it's digital out into your main rig's dac. Don't think it's iOS compatible, though, so if you're running Apple...
