NAS

I know the NAS is importante for streaming. What kind of Nas do you advice?I´m interested in Synology, I have a WD My Cloud but I guess the specs are low, I need a better Nas. What happens when the specs are low, I´m having a few drop out´s when streaming.
I have a few Synology drives - flawless. Don't mess around with them either, album artworks is also flawlessle, You just need to use it properly. There is absolutely no need for other server apps either. Happy to help.
I built my own Vortexbox using a intel Skylake i5 processor and 8GB of Ram, it is a great minimserver for my Qute.
Synology also has a great reputation.
Building your own can save a lot of money and you can have robust hardware.
Most popular and reported as reliable with NAIM - QNAP, Synology, running between 2-6 TB drives, designed specifically for NAS. Best to follow NAS manufacturer's advice as to which drives they recommend (WD, Segate, etc.).
UPnP software: Asset or Minimserver.
100% for Synology or QNAP. Consideration need to be also made re UPnP media server software. Synology has its own a very easy pre-installed 'Media Server'. It plays all file types (WAV FLAC AIFF etc) perfectly, however its transcoding program is not so good if you want to transcode (all the other file types to WAV). Synology owners who do transcode use the preinstalled 3rd party software called 'Minimserver', thats easy enough to install but not exactly plug & play like Synology's software. QNAP can install Minimserver & also the excellent 'Asset'. This can also be installed on Synology but its not officially supported by Synology & it does require some basic IT experience.
I suspect your dropouts with WD My Cloud is the media server software rather than its OS (CPU & RAM) specs.
I have a WD MyCloud and it has a low hardware spec and uses wonky as the media server software. i have experienced drop out, locking up and lots of other small issues that seem to be caused by asking the My cloud to do more than one task at once. I am in the process of swapping to Synology as it seems from my research to be an easier install for the non it literate.

A Synology NAS with WD Red drive(s) is a great option, but if you are having dropouts that's more likely to be down to your network setup.

Hi,
I would agree that if you are getting dropouts then the chances are it is a connectivity / throughput issue and not specifically a UPnP server / NAS issue ...
Are you using WiFi for your connection to your network and if so can you (as a test) try hard wiring your streamer to your router and see if you get the same issue?
I'm definitely not a fan of the WD implementation of Twonky but I've not known it give dropouts...
Cheers
Phil
Very happy with my Synology DS412+.
I´m using Wi Fi, the streamer doesn´t have Ethernet.
But the streamer has another problema...From a post in another fórum :
"Working with my streamer,Nad Media Tuner, sometimes I just see the directory "All tracks" doesn´t appear Ãlbuns, Folders, Artists, etc, just "all tracks".It must appear Ãlbuns ,Folders or Artists to select and choose, but only"all tracks"I use the Nad streamer software(app) on my tablet and the BubbleUpnp. This happens with the two apps, Nad Media Tuner and BubbleUpnp" |
Hi Nuno,
It looks like you have the NAD MT2 Media Tuner which can stream music from Spotify Connect and Internet Radio using vTuner.
Assuming that you are now looking to stream your own music files, you will need to install a software UPnP server such as Minimserver (free) or Asset on your computer or on whichever NAS drive you choose to buy. It is this software server which scans your music collection and uses the metadata tags (e.g. artist, album, track title etc.) to present the music browsing views to the apps on your tablet and allow you to select and play the music you want to listen to.
The Qnap is a good and reliable option, which can be upgraded through a better power supply.
Delighted with my QNAP with two Wetern Digital Red Drives. A year in and it's performed flawlessly. I also have a 3 year old Netgear Ready NAS104 running backups and that too has been fine.

So isn´t enough the BubbleUpnp app that I instaled on my smartphone?

I haven't used the BubbleUPnP app but I suspect that, like the naim app I have on my iPad, it is a control point which is used to control the music files which are actually served up by the UPnP server software installed on your computer or NAS i.e. it lets you see your files, select and play/pause the music etc.
So, to answer your question, you will still need to install a UPnP server.

The server software needs to be on the NAS where you store your music files.
OK, thank you all. I was thinking that was some kind of problema with my Nas, but I see now it isn´t
BTW, the WD My Cloud includes Twonky DLNA Media Server.
Hi Nuno,
Does BubbleUPnP list your Twonky server? If not you may need to enable the server on your WD My Cloud NAS.
Assuming the My Cloud works like the old MyBook Live you can log into the NAS by typing its IP address into your web browser. Once you get into the My Cloud's GUI select Settings and then Media. You should then see a tick box against Enable Twonky Service. After Enabling Twonky, select ">" which will show a list of media players which should include your NAD MT. Note that it may only list its IP address and/or MAC address and show it as a generic media player.
Below this you should see Status. Again select ">" and you should see that Twonky is scanning and adding your music files to its database.
Good luck.
DLNA server activate is what I see. There is no box enables Twonky Service.
Hi Nuno,
Looks like the GUI for the WD MyCloud differs from the MyBook Live GUI. I assume that you have activated the DLNA server?
On my WD MyBook Live I can configure the Twonky server by visiting its webpage usually found at the NAS drive's IP address followed by :9000 e.g. 192.168.1.xxx:9000
Might be worthwhile checking on the WD forum website for further info/assistance or consider getting one of the NAS drives recommended by others on this thread.

Hello,
Yes, the DLNA server is activated.
I guess a better NAS is the way to go, if I want streaming.
Thank you
Nuno,
You can access a pdf file of the manual for the WD MyCloud Mirror at the following link:
https://www.wdc.com/content/da...nual/4779-705145.pdf
Page 69 of the manual details how to enable the DLNA server plus further info which might help.

I think you may well be right.
all the best

That's what I'd do - you can get something like a Synology with 2TB drive for about £220 in the UK. Keep the MyCloud as a backup, it should be good at that!
