Mains Power Sockets
Posted by: Bryce Curdy on 12 September 2017
I'm well aware that of the regular brands MK is recommended. Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, of any of the more expensive and esoteric models? My dealer had previously had very good results from single sockets made by a company called Lens but is now struggling to source any and a Google search just seems to go to camera/photography sites!
At the end of the day, you need twin unswitched sockets, with as much copper/brass internals. Avoid any coatings, gold, silver and definitely phosphor bronze as used in medical sockets. I bought a boxed of twenty Crabtree ones years ago when I was doing my mains and selectively tested each one for it's rivet tightness, etc.. Out of twenty, about 4-5 failed. I could have easily repaired them, but had plenty to choose from. I preferred the layout of Crabtree vs MK and the fact that Crabtree could be modified to accept larger diameter cable (or my rails in my distribution box).
I believe the Lens was a single socket designed by a Paul Soor. A mechanical engineer who had them made for the now defunct Blade Audio dealers.
It was a decoupled job that tried to eliminate vibrations and any physical contact between the wall and the electricity supply. Probably meant for those wanting to take custom install to the nth degree and running very expensive cable from the separate consumer unit. With the intention of connecting a high quality star earthed power distribution device.
other sockets out there on the audiophile market are really a matter of suck it and see. Some go crazy for rhodium, others prefer silver plated. Some can't tell any difference. Probably a good idea to swap out the sockets for new ones every few years. As it's an area that can't and shouldn't be cleaned - as like speaker cables, interconnects and plug pins that can to get rid of crud build up.
There was a reply that was deleted earlier this evening. I'm assuming it was felt to have broken forum rules which is fair enough.
Moderated Post: The post in question broke a cardinal forum rule and was immediately removed. I have emailed you to explain further.
I've never tried any of these posh audiophile sockets, only regular MK unswitched ones. I installed some of these earlier this year, and they were flimsy compared to the older UK made ones I've used in the past. No complaints about the sound, though.
MK do a number of ranges of sockets. We have MK edge in the house and they are extremely well made. They do however have metal face plates but there are a number of options.
I now have MK 'Logic' everywhere around the house. I replaced the last of the old original installed sockets & a switch with Logic about a month ago. Re ChrisSU post on quality, I have not seen any change in quality with the Logic range over numbers of years & the new ones I bought last month are the same - top notch.
