Nap 300 rack placement
Posted by: Bob the Builder on 18 September 2017
Hopefully I will be picking up a Nap 300 in the next few days and need advice re placement on my rack.
I will have 2 free spaces on my 4 tier Hutter rack for the 300 when it arrives, the other full width shelf will contain my 282 which I believe will be best placed on the top shelf? The bottom shelf which is smaller about 110mm contains a Linn Lingo Lp12 psu and a Dual 3rd party psu that powers my 282.
As the 300 will be placed on Fraim glass, cups & balls niether box will fit on the small shelf so do I place the 300 on the 2 shelves directly above the bottom and below the 282 or shall I put the small shelf containing Lingo and Dual psu in between the 300 and the 282?
I do have an LP storage unit next to the Hutter that where my Napsc and 2 box Trichord Dino phono stage are situated on two empty shelves so there is scope for moving the Lingo and Dual psu around.
Hi Bob,
I would place the 300PS on the bottom shelf, then the 300 above. Personally I would then leave an empty shelf and have the 282 on top and clear from power supplies.
Not sure if this is possible given your other items. If not, get an extra level of Hutter...
IMHO of course!

Oh, and I would prioritise distance before Fraimcups and balls.

No clue about NAP 300 placement as a humble XS2 owner... Just a brief line to congratulate you on your most recent upgrade!!
Your system has evolved quite a bit over the last few months, if my recollection is correct.
I guess the ND5XS is gone -- please post your experience with the Raspberry Pi if you go down this route.
You want the 282 at the top, with the 300 head unit beneath. Ideally then have a gap, with the power supplies at the bottom. The challenge is what to do with the two burndies and the two din to XLR cables, all of which ideally need to be off the floor, which is almost impossible with a single stack. It may be a case of two racks, which is the ideal, or longer spacers to keep the boxes apart. Once you get to this level, good setup makes a world of difference.
HH is right.
300DR owner here.
One trick you can use with a single stack is to use hooks and loops of cord to tie up and suspend the Burndies.
Hello,
I have same kind of issue at home to fit my 252 vs 300.
I have 3 racks of 3 shelves, no way to have empty shelf anywhere as all are occupied and obviously CDS3 must be on top of one of the racks.
Today, I have:
BD player CDS3 XPS
NAPV 175 252 Supercap
HC preamp 300 300PS
So basically, my though was taking CDS3 in place of BD player, put 252 on top of middle rack and BD player between 252 and 300.
Would you have better suggestion (considering length of the cables).
thx
Just last week, I set up a Custom Design Milan 4 tier to accommodate a recently purchased 300. As suggested, also found a way to keep the interconnects from touching the floor and back wall by using two triangular shaped cable elevators made from wood (maple, I think). Moving from a 3 shelf Isoblue to this new rack has changed the way the music is presented. A definite improvement sonically!
Stacking order is as follows:
272
300
XPS DR
300 PS
Any/all suggestions welcomed in terms of PS placement.

I (and my dealer) checked with Naim on shelf placement. The Supercap needs to go the bottom brawn shelf as it is particularly sensitive to having stuff placed placed below it.
I have:
NDS LP12
stageline Armageddon
252 300PS
Space 555PS
300 Supercap
I will have to re-evaluate if/when I get a Lingo or Radikal as I understand it prefers to be on the brain stack.

Thanks for the advice I could leave the small shelf empty and put it between the two 300 boxes so
282
300 Head Unit
Small Empty Shelf
300
Hopefully this will help with the Burndies.

An empty shelf between the 282 and 300 also helps. Where is the 282 PS? Do recall you have a non Naim one.
Phil
Phil I'm afraid an empty shelf between the 282 and 300 isn't possible I live in a two up two down terraced house and space is at a premium. My system is confined to one alcove in the living room so two rack's isn't an option.
I have one of those square 'stacking' type storage units to the side and also above the rack so I can free up a couple of those for the 282 psu and the Lingo although not Ideal I already have my phono stage on one of these and it doesn't seem to harm SQ.

Hi Timo,
Yes after promising myself only minor changes it has been quite a busy year. First of all the 2Qute (supposedly my only upgrade this year) and then a 250-2 trade in against my 200 came up which was to good to refuse and now the 300 which is a straight swap with the 250-2 and the ND5XS no cash outlay so as I'm only using the ND5 as a streamer a no brainer.
I have bought a used Raspberry Pi / HifiBerry Digi + Pro pre loaded with Volumio and a wifi dongle the hard bit will be finding a solution that allows me to carry on using Tidal that doesn't cost a fortune Roon I'm afraid isn't an option at present.
I really like the diy aspect of the Raspberry and hope to enjoy it rather than be frustrated by the experience and of course I will post my findings.

I spoke with my dealer who spoke with Naim. Naim have had a lot if phone calls after this remark to which they have replied that it makes absolutely no difference.
All the power supplies together on the right of a two stack arrangements is good and space between them and sensitive components is recommended. But if it ain't broke don't fix it.
If you are taking the rack apart it is something you could try, and periodic removing connectors and plugging them back in is a good thing and usually improves SQ.
Bob, I understand your situation so this post is for others like me who might have thought they need to reorder their power supplies. Enjoy your 300!

Should be picking up my Nap 300 tomorrow at last. I have freed up the small shelf on my rack in preparation
282 >>
300 Head Unit >>
Empty 100mm Shelf >>
300 >>
The Napsc will be located on the very bottom shelf of my cubed stacking unit the Trichord Dino in the cube above and the Lingo and Dual 282 psu in the cube above that. I do have doors that can be fitted to each individual cube so may hide the Napsc, Dino, Lingo & psu away leaving a nice simple 3 box amp and my wall mounted LP12.
Out of interest does anyone know the length of the 300's Burndies are they 1m or 1.5m ?

If you fancy Witch Hat Din to XLR I have some that are well run in and now replaced by SL. I doubt the Bundies are much more than a meter.

Yes quite possibly Phil I currently have Chord TA between the 250 and psu but am not a position to buy another at the moment so the Witch Hat might be a nice intermediary cable.
Very frustrating afternoon drove for an hour and a half to swap my ND5 & 250 only to find I had packed the wrong remote ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then because I couldn't set up on this guy's network because of course you need the remote I thought well at least I can plug an iPod and use the buttons on the front to navigate and it worked fine sounded great through a 252/300 so we plug my 250-2 in to test it and for some utterly inexplicable reason the ND5XS just freezes and will do nothing. Where it had been playing perfectly one minute it just froze on my playlist menu wouldn't play wouldn't move up or down through the menu nothing.
So a very glum trip home without a 300 and now have to drive back up midweek to do it all again. Guess what got it home connected it up flawless!!
Just been back up to complete the swap and now have the Nap 300 safe at home hopefully will have a go setting it up later!
