evening guys

hope your all good ,not been on here for a while as my current kit 200/202/hicap/flatcap /rega rpm6 has been boxed up due to building works .could do with abit of advice please on the following issues , before set it all up again

i,m going to upgrade my kit as not done anything since 2011 it all needs servcing & fancy a change  so ive just bought some preloved boxes 282/250n but they both around 13 years old so i thought thats fine ill get them servced at a naim dealer, but hold on i,ve missed a trick here as now it seems that dr is the way to go i called class a today to disscus he told me they have to go back to naim for dr upgrades, around the £1000 mark . thats a bit beyond my budget so the really the questions are what the best way forward with this would you bother with servcing?

thanks pete

It's the HC that needs updating as the 282 itself is not DRed. I would get the 250 serviced and live with it for a year or two safe in the knowledge that you can upgrade your system later without a costly box change.

My 300 is in need of a service soon, but it's a superb amp as it is. No rush to DR here. Others may disagree.

First up I'd just put the 282 and 250 in your system as they are.   Get used to the sound, sell on the 202 and 200.  Think about servicing later. I've got an XPS, and 2 HCs in my system all over 10 years old, unserviced and non-dr.  Still sounds great.

Regards,

Lindsay

The 250 is the item most likely to require a service, and most likely to perform poorly if you don't have it done. If the DR upgrade is out of your budget, I would suggest that you take it to Class A anyway, and get it checked out. Alternatively, take it to a Naim dealer, who will be able to compare it to a known good 250, so that you can assess it's performance.

many thanks for your replys guys ,i,m now thinking get 250n servced & perhaps the hicap dr done deppending on costs

just leave the 282 as it is

i'd skip the DR updates and get everything serviced -- if for no other reason than to avoid boxing everything up again for servicing and/or worrying about it later. Class A attended to my 282/250 and i think you'll be pleased!

I’d do the same just get it serviced and leave the DR upgrades for later

Check the prices of service vs. service & DR at the same time. The DR and service together is priced very competitively (and much cheaper than having the two done separately).

I would sell on the 250.2 if not DR, much prefer a 250 CB or Olive serviced amp, these are cheaper than 250.2 plus service, he could get a SC for 282 instead.

No Naim unit suddenly 'got worse' when the DR version appeared - please dont forget this. Much like Linsay above, I happily run 'non DR' 250 & HiCap, without feeling short changed or inferior in some way.  Run them as is - then let Class A service them. Still awesome.

I agree prior to the introduction of the DR upgrade I can only ever remember hearing good things about the 250-2 on this forum still a fantastic pairing 282/250-2 service and be happy!

You didn’t hear much good about it from me. The 200 is much better, unless you like your music bloated and ponderous, which is how it made my system sound. All in my opinion of course, though quite a few others have expressed a preference for the 200 over the 250.2.

Would agree with most of what has been said other than the 250DR is considerably better than the 250.2 IMHO and I have owned both and used both with a 282. If you send the 250.2 for a service then I would thouroughly recommend getting it DR'd at the same time if that is affordable. But don't forget to have the 282 serviced also. Not sure how old your Hicap is but it also will benefit from a service (recapping) after 10 years and, dare I say it, will also benefit from DRing.

However I broadly agree with servicing/recapping first and DRing next if you have to make choices.

Oh, and SL cables are more that just icing on the cake! They make a considerable difference, but leave them until everything is serviced and DR'd.

Not here in Austria. Only € 50 cheaper when 250.2 re-capping and DR-upgrading is done at once.

Got a 200DR while my 250.2 gets upgraded. It's great but I am looking forward to having my 250 back again.

I also would plug all in as is for a few months. Then DR the HiCap. Once funds allow either trade the 250 for a 250DR or service it to that level. The 282 would be serviced next but that is minimal in comparison to the other steps.
