Anyone daft enough to be using Windows Edge?

If so, be aware that there is a pretty good chance that at some point in time you will lose your Internet 'Favourites' in Edge, so please make sure you back them up regularly.

I have been a user of Microsoft Edge for some time now, and have quite liked it on the whole. However, following a very recent Windows 10 Update, I discovered that my Internet 'Favourites' in Edge (built up over a year or so ago) had simply disappeared. Unfortunately, while I do back up everything on my PC I deem to be important very regularly, I had been stupid enough not to include my Internet Favourites in this category and in my backup regime. Recovering to a restore point prior to the update has been unsuccessful, as have all my other attempts to find my lost favourites. Contacting Microsoft Support for help simply resulted in them asking me to repeat everything I had already attempted for myself. In the end, they simply advised me to contact a local PC Maintenance firm who should have specialist equipment that might be able to retrieve the file.

Scrolling through the Microsoft Community forums, I discovered that many other people appeared to have encountered the same issue, and in some cases on multiple occasions. This simply isn't good enough, and so I guess I will probably switch to another browser, and I will certainly make sure I include my Internet favourites in my future backup regime. A huge inconvenience, but I guess, not the end of the world.

However, those of you who use Microsoft Edge as your browser, please be aware of this potential issue, and if anyone has any suggestions for retrieving the favourites, I'd be grateful for any advice.

Do you have a Microsoft account? Mine get synced across machines and on the single occasion that this happened a simple restart fixed it.

I do have a Microsoft Account, but only use this on a single PC.

I've just spent most of today PM with MS Help Support (I found you can only get there via Settings pages) given I had no internet access, with hyperlinks etc dead.

My issue was access to Edge (which kept closing) post the 2 updates KB4038788 and 4021572, as it lost function (Windows10 tiles stopped working vis the web shortcuts). 'System Restore' didn't work.

Removing/Uinstalling IBM's Trusteer Security EndPoint appears to have fixed some issues for now - suggest look for and try this. It could be that MS's Virus and new Security doesn't like this programme?!

b.frustrating though!!!

This is the 2nd instance where I've heard that the IBM download has a conflict with the latest Windows updates, the latter I understand being phased, hence the issue not arising all at once.

p.s. I've just tried to leave feedback with IBM on the issue and it seems their systems won't entertain web-service via Edge.

So, the issue appears to be with the security protection on banking apps and on-line banking (esp RBS/NWB which recommend this IBM security).

I tried over quite a while. The final straw was when MS mail started to cause e-mail password issues sync'ing with my BT mail. I dropped Mail & also abandoned Edge in favour of Google Chrome & never looked back.    As & when I get to hear Edge is fixed, then I'm willing to give it a try again,  but I'm in no hurry to move on from the excellent Chrome

I have never used Google Chrome, but I'll probably give it a go.

I don't use MS Mail, so can't really comment on it, but I'll be sorry to leave Edge. I have had very few problems with it other than my current one.

I've been using W10 for over 18 months and not had a single problem with Edge.

Why? I immediately removed it, along with everything else that came with W10. The only things on the screen when I hit the windows logo, is news, control panel and firefox.

This is a long shot, but will only take a few minutes to try. Load Mozilla firefox onto the PC, when you start to use it, it will give you the option to import settings from your current browser, these setting include favourites. There’s a small chance firefox will be able to locate your favourites.

Chrome and Firefox are most balanced in terms of useability IMO

Thanks for the suggestion Fatcat.

I already have Firefox installed so I'll give this a go. I used to use it occasionally with some sites when I had a much slower broadband connection than I have now.

Good suggestion Fatcat, but unfortunately the imported (from Edge) favourites folder is empty following the successful completion of the import process.

I'm not sure if is genuinely the case, but someone in the Microsoft Community posted that Microsoft has recently changed the location where it stores favourites for Edge, and that the new location is a database - Spartan.edb. Does anyone know if this is the case, and if so, if there is any way of browsing the .edb database. During one of my conversations with Microsoft support agents today, one of them checked with his technical department and more or less seemed to confirm that this is the case. However, he did not offer any advice other than contact a local PC firm to get them to extract the favourites from the database. This advice seemed a little strange, and I was not particularly convinced that he knew what he was talking about, so the whole Spartan.edb thing may be totally incorrect.

Just discovered a useful feature in W10.

If you go to control panel, there is a folder “file history”, open it and you have the option to backup, desktop, downloads and favourites. I’ve just turned it on and it’s busily copying the files to drive “D”

For some time Microsoft have been seeking to increase use of their database technology to support the operation of Windows.
However, I can't say much more about this in a public forum.

I despise Windows 10, and am thankful I only added it to one of my 2 machines, and wish I hadn't done that.

I feel like I bought the laptop for MS, and that they now own it. This information about Edge makes me glad I didn't bother with it either.

Regrettably, this "we know what's best for you" approach to computing is only likely to become more prevalent.

Yes a trend that stared with Apple.  However for consumer level computer systems I can see the sense behind it - I'm for ever trying to persuade people to take proper multi level backups, and particularly to not use Administrator accounts to browse the internet.  It's always an uphill battle and usually in vain.

In these circumstances where the majority of people won't help themselves, the manufacturer ends up having to do what they can to take over, to reduce their support costs.
