If you want to just play CDs it would be better to buy a CD player. The HDX is comparatively expensive and is intended as a hard disc player/network player. Your best choice depends what you want to do and what you are connecting it to.

The Unitiserve can play CDs as well as ripping them, but it's not something I would ever feel the need to do. Put a CD in, and you only have to wait about 4 minutes for the rip, then you can play it.

I too went down the Core route and kept my CD player as I still buy CDs on a frequent basis, since having the Core I haven't used my CD player!
