Party mode?
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 September 2017
Since getting a second Qb, when I use multi-room between the main system and the Qb in the kitchen, I now see the option of 'Party Mode'. It sounds very exciting and I wonder if activating it will make me feel like I'm 20 again. What is it?

I have recently bought a Qb and borrowed a second Qb from my dealer to use at a function so got to use multi room and party mode. Party mode enables you to set a common volume of both (or more) Qbs. Although it is pretty cool, it doesn't get you drunk or make you more attractive to women - unfortunately.
Well Naim research had better get their finger out and work on that pronto, as none of us are getting any younger!
To be clear Party Mode syncs all your MuSos and Qbs to play the same tracks in perfect time and the Group Volume sets a common volume. You can of course play different music from each unit and set individual volumes.
I found the Group Volume had a bit of delay on the slide setting but I was using the Qbs wirelessly and they were a fair distance away from, and on a different floor to the NDS control unit.
Great fun though and very impressive.
So is it just a way of synchronising them all without having to select each one individually?
From memory you still have to select the Qbs you want syncd (presumably if you had several you might not want them all to play at the same time). Select Party mode to synch them and choose to use the Group Volume or adjust the volumes individually. I was using 2 Qbs in Party Mode and was streaming the same Tidal tracks to the pair of them.
I would recommend hooking up Ethernet cables to the Qbs as I found wifi operation caused a slight delay in the Group Volume control.
It only appeared when I added a second Qb.
Yes, because Party Mode only applies to the MuSos and Qbs you have in the system and of course you need a minimum of two of these to sync. I only noticed it when the second Qb was added.
Got it. So the 272 is too grown up to party.
I saw that yesterday it must vary slightly depending on set up I have, a NDX, Qb and a Unitilite and it shows up as Group Volume no Party Mode showing, Group Volume only comes into play when all three devices are selected not showing when you just have NDX and Qb or NDX and Unitilite selected.
Yes, my NDS also seemed to be excluded from the Group Volume control. I believe the streamers are also syncd in Party Mode but you have to individually control their volume. It makes sense because you could be having a party in the kitchen with your Qb on full blast and not notice the tweeters blowing up in your main system in the sitting room. I guess this is why the streamers are excluded from Group Volume control.
I think I am right here, I was a little the worse for wear when I had my 'function'.

It possibly failed to show Party Mode because you only had one Qb in the system. If you had added a second Qb or a MuSo, Party Mode would have come to life, as it were.
My appologies for my ignorance, but what is the difference between multiroom and party mode??
My understanding of the terminology is, Multiroom is a generic reference to the capability of a system to play music either synched or unsynched in more than one room. Party Mode is when two or more active speakers (i.e. MuSos and/or Qbs) are synched to play the same music in exact time with each other in two or more locations.
As I am not 100% sure and as there is some confusion over multi room functionality, it might be helpful if someone from Naim could chime in and set us straight.

I also wonder if I can play 2 separate systems from my Core at the same time, one in UPNP and the other using the SPDIF out from the Core directly into my active speakers.I think it was David Hendon that mentioned I could, but have not got around to trying it yet.Another question would be,can I play the same track to both in sync?

And you know what? If you add a third the party will grow up to orgy.

Thanks Nigel - when I use multi room with my mu-so Qb and my Uniti Aton, the music also plays synchronously ... so is this also party mode?

That would be the ménage à trois mode, yet to be released due to concerns over sustained connectability and increased susceptibility to virus.
I think it means all round to yours HH!!!!!
Dustysox, I think you mean a 'Bring a Qb party' ..(noting the current cashback offer)....although numerous Qbs still wouldn't make The Smiths sound good to my ears (sorry HH).
@Nigelb, I think you have it right but I'll ask Phil for chapter and verse on Party mode and Multi Room definitions.
I notice that if I hit the Party Mode button, all 3 of my Qbs are synced with the NDX in one hit, so at least in my environment Party Mode seems to be a single click sync all. I'd never tried it when a Qb is master, so I just have now, the 3 Qbs all sync, the NDX doesn't seem to be included.

What? What? What an outrageous thing to say. My flabber is ghasted. Party Mode - What Difference Does it Make?

It makes none.

"liked" the response but I still love the Smiths
BTW surprised that "party mode" is invoked with radio 4 as the source
