cd / streaming

Posted by: grahambateman on 22 September 2017

hello all.

Currently using Deezer premium via sonos into 150/122 and dac combo. (Flac ) Love the convenience of streaming but have noticed that the quality of streaming does vary in quality and clarity according to the artist and type ie jazz / vocals etc. Currently listening to cat Stevens  the laughing apple tracks , and clarity very good , indeed as most of his are . Jazz again is on the whole very good. Thing is when I stream main stream , it just doesn't sound as good on some occasions.

So here is the thing. Can anyone tell me if I would be better to go towards more cd based items . I have seen that naim do the cd x2 which I can use into the dac. Would this be a better option for the clarity that I am looking for. I do have a number of cds that I really haven't spun in a very long time , or is it better to save the money and wait for the advent of MQA on the naim to really deliver?

Thanks

Graham

Or setup a NAS drive, rip you CDs to that, then play your CD material from the NAS and stream from the net for stuff you don't "own".

Best of both worlds.

The playback quality from a NAS isn't affected by the timing vagaries of the internet, and playback will be the full quality the system can deliver given the recording quality of the particular source material  (you'll probably easily be able to distinguish variances in recording quality this way).

Your profile says you own a Cd5, which is a bit confusing.

Get youself to a dealer and have a play with a streamer controlled by an iPad, playing ripped CDs, Hi-Res downloads, web streams, iRadio etc. You'll probably love the accessibility of a huge range of music at your fingertips, and the sound quality. If you don't, a CDX2 is the way forwards.

agree with Huge, on ripping CD's get a NAS either play through DAC, dBpoweramp is great software and easy to use, my NAS with 4TB memory cost under £500

i also found when I moved to my NDX from CDX2 - I now play a lot more of my music collection as I flick through on IPAD so much easier

You don't need to spend anything like £500.

A Synology DS216se is plenty fast enough for streaming any Hi-Res audio, and even with 4TB of disk space costs less than £260.

Same here when I purchased a NDX, CD player long gone.
