Using a headphone amp with a NAC 152 XS

Posted by: diggygun on 24 September 2017

Hi all.

As you can see, I have a NAC 152 XS pre amp, this has Flatcap XS which also powers the CD5 XS CDplayer. The power amp is the NAP 155 XS.

Naim state that the Headline can't be used with the 152 XS, which nay be too much to spend for my needs.

My query is,  what headphone amplifier can be used with the 152XS and how are they connected to the 152XS as there are no tape sockets

i was contemplating getting some Senheisser wireless headphone with a transmitter base station as if I get wired, I can see my dog getting tied up in the cable

thanks for your help

I use AKG and Beyerdynamic headphones on my Rega Ear headphone amp

It is connected via line out on my Nac 152xs and provide great music

Why can you not use a Headline with a 152XS?  Line Out (fixed-level) works!  It would work equally well into a Tape recoder, too.

Naim on their website state that it can't be used

So would the line out RCAs work to provide the signal and does that mute the speakers when the headphones are used ?

I see what you see on the Headline product page.  I think it means to say that Tape inputs exist on all but the 152XS, which is true.  It is poorly worded, if that is what they mean.  I cannot imagine what other use the fixed-Line-Out on the 152 could have.

The Headline is available fitted with RCA plugs.  Any headphone amp with RCA plugs should work.

I call for mercy from Naim Support to clear up the question.

In sympathy,

Nick

You can't use a standard Headline on a NAC152xs as there's no tape loop.  However I can't see any reason why an RCA version wouldn't work via the Line Out. Unless, I've missed something of course...

If I get the headline, will I need another power supply as my current FlatCap is powering my CD and Pre-amp?

if so, what other headphone amps are recommended?

The Headline always needs an external power supply — iSupply, Flatcap, Highcap, or Supercap.  The Rega EAR is a commonly recommended cheaper alternative.  It comes with its own power supply.

Have ordered the Rega EAR. Thanks for your responses

Let us know how you like it.

@Naim should fix the confusing text under Technology and Craft  for the Headline page.
