A suggestion for Naim

Posted by: AussieSteve on 27 September 2017

I have been on a couple of other sites and I see they have a section in their site or forum where they have a section dedicated to explaining the same common questions people have regarding their kit, and also advice on room acoustics, speaker placement and the like. So often I have seen here the same questions come up, yet not often does a Naim engineer explain their gear. eg, transformer hum , causes and cures, amplifier clipping and speaker compression, amplifier power-I have official test results showing the 250DR amp under load and the actual output in watts at a given load (from hifi mag) since many, many people need explanation  of "Naim watts" especially when finding amp/speaker combo,   which power supply works with which component and how it's configured,(great diagrams in manual show that) grounding - electrical and physical of components and speakers (Greg Timbers from JBL helped me understand the importance of grounding loudspeakers to improve bass response), vibration control, cable requirements for Naim and other makers, you get my drift. I was given a great link by Richard Dane re: DIN and Why Naim use it, that is what I mean all round. Harbeth have a good section for their speakers. Obviously not all parameters can be covered but their is enough questions asked here on the forum which, I believe Naim should respond to as they are often engineering questions which when asked enough warrant an official answer. It would be a great help and keep people informed on the facts and not opinion. Cheers

I add that I know we have a FAQ section, it's very handy and about what I mean, just expanded.

Yes. I believe most proper Naim dealers have to take an extensive 10 year exam to be fully up to code.  Sorting out that exam in a way that's accessible for others could undermine the whole philosophy of Naim.

I think Naim would see that they go a step beyond that by using a dealer network that helps you with this stuff on a individual basis.

Steve, I intend to clean up and also expand the FAQ section here over the next 12 months - that process has already begun.  Already the FAQ now has a direct link at the top of the forum so it's easier to find.

Of course, some subjects are way too broad to cover in an FAQ and often better to get advice from your dealer.

Maybe some member suggestions for FAQs?

(Richard, If you don't want to run the risk that you'll get overloaded with suggestions, then please delete this post!)

Huge, anyone can make a suggestion but of course I cannot guarantee it will make it into the FAQ.

" Naim Recommended NAS drives for Naim systems, and fail safe guide to set them up".     I remember reading that Naim were putting  together a paper on this.

They did,  problem is its out of date by numbers of years & some of it has been removed.   It's in Customer Support > Knowledge Base

Furthermore all such info about NAS drives & "broadband routers" goes out of date far too quickly as these products have very short market lives (typically being replaced every 12 -24 months).  There again switches mostly just work (in fact I don't know of any that don't); but on the other hand WAPs are almost impossible to recommend as they depend on an appropriate environment and a correctly configured "broadband router" for correct operation.

As a result there's no point in Naim even trying to maintain a list of suitable devices in any of these product classes, but dealers may have favourites that they know how to configure.

There are a few items (primarily NAS drives) that are known to be troublesome; but, for valid legal reasons, Naim can't maintain a list of 'not recommended' products!

The one thing I would suggest for an FAQ iro streaming networks is Mike-B's simple network connection diagram.

Posted on: 27 September 2017 by Richard Dane

Regarding networking, streaming etc.. that's already in hand at Naim. Phil has written some great guides, some of which has already been posted. And I know some members here have posted good stuff too. Hopefully the end result will encompass the best from these, with a kind of "dummies" guide and then the option to focus on specific areas in more detail. so watch this space...

and some members have helped Phil with writing and editing some of those guides - definitely worth a read.. hopefully they will hit nails on heads.. specifically the wifi, streaming and broadband guides

Yes, absolutely. Thanks Simon.

Cheers all, Richard thanks. I think, as I have seen elsewhere, that many questions could be resolved by answers written by Naim themselves. I have seen many times the same questions appear on the forum, and it seems a great fix where possible. I really think Naim should resolve or answer the one question of transformer hum, it is often raised and needs explanation, it shouldn't require a new re-wire and transformer out front. Cheers

Regarding transformer hum.   Could be Naim idealology in getting the best out' of a transformer after the fact. But not so keen on what's going in' it, or before.   If it's really down to mains born problems like so called dc offset, why not convert the ac to dc before it hits. Or other measures.   Something to think about.

Steve, I have written at length on transformer hum on a number of occasions. Unfortunately the bigger and better (quality) the toroidal transformer the more prone to hum under certain mains pollution situations.  It's relatively easy to make a totally hum free toroidal transformer - the problem is they don't perform as well musically. The manufacturer tests for noise and so do Naim at the factory - any over a certain level are rejected, but of course the machine cannot replicate every type of pollution out there.  The good news is that on a recent visit to the factory I was told by Trevor that the extensive work undertaken by both Naim and Nuvotem over many years has begun to pay off in that it seems a way has been found to make the transformers less prone to hum - good news in that many more now pass Naim's noise testing.

Going slightly off topic - but I have never seen Naim amps measurements in magazine reviews.I am probably wrong on this and to be honest don't understand these graphs where the ideal is everything flat. But other manufactures equipment seem to have graphs with how they measure; but Naim does'nt seem to be included ?

Just curious why not.

TC, most magazine these days offer mainly subjective reviews.  However, some, like Stereophile and Hifi News do undertake measurements.  In the old days the old format Hifi Choice group reviews also had quite comprehensive measurements.  These usually showed Naim amps to be conservatively rated.

We definitely need 'how do I connect my headline?' and 'should I leave my equipment on all the time?'  If people then actually read them, 25% of threads would go at a stroke. And if we had 'how long does it take my equipment to run in?' we could lose another 10%.
