Naim app update for IOS

Posted by: musicfan51 on 28 September 2017

Do not do the naim firmware IOS 11 update if you still want to use your playlists. Some code must be missing because I can not acesss playlists now, I did both my phone and IPad and both have the same issue. My wife had not did the firmware update on her phone and we can still access playlists and the songs on her iPhone. I called the Naim importer for North America and they confirmed or were pretty sure that the issue is in the firmware update .

My set up is Naim NDS with 555DR and Naim Uniti Core. I found my older mini IPad that does not have the latest firmware update and it accesses the Playlists fine. So something in the newest Naim IOS firmware is effecting the ability to access playlists . Just wanted to warn people . I am sure they will fix it within a week or so.

I am confused. Are you talking about the Apple IOS 11 firmware update or the Naim 5.8 app update or both?

It is confusing isn't it. Sorry . I was emotional when I posted cause I can not access my playlists ( and still can't) after the Newst Naim app update that I believe was for iOS 11. Just wanted to warn people there was an issue.

The Naim app update wasn't anything to do with IOS11. It works with any IOS after 9.3  it's more about the new Unitis in fact. .

i haven't seen anyone else report this problem. I suggest that you email Phil at support@naimaudio.com and ask for his advice.

The app did several odd things (rearranging sources, loss of favourites) initially but now seems ok.

I was of the understanding that this new Naim update was to help support IOS 11. Sorry if I am wrong. The Naim expert at importer to North America agreed that there seems to be an issue.  My IPad and and iPhone were updated and then I had the issue of no accesss to playlists ! My mini IPad was not updated and I had no issues . Overnight the minipad did the update (I did not have it in automatic upgrade, not sure why it automatically upgraded) now no acesss to my playlists. Obviously something is wrong with the Naim app upgrade . Naim importer agreed . That is all the information I have for you . Chose to not believe me . Just reporting the issue I am having !

Hi [@mention:47746326255127503],

I have the same set up, NDS/Core iOS 11.0.1 and the latest app build on my iPad, and the Naim app build 5.7.5 on my iPhone.

Whilst the Core play lists are not something that I use a lot.

Yes I can see the same issue, play list available on iOS app 5.7.5, however missing on the latest build.

For me the good news, if we can call that, is the play lists are still on the Core and it is just the latest app that is unable to see them.

I do believe you!

I don't know what else to suggest. It is always worth trying restarting the app (by double clicking the home button and swiping the app upwards then click the home button once and then select the app again). Also you could try restarting your router, your streamer and wherever your music is stored. If none of that works, email Naim support as I suggested before (I don't work for Naim - I'm just a customer like you and all I am saying is that I haven't seen anyone else report thid problem on the forum yet.)

Since writing the above I can see that Simon has reported the same issue, so you probably have to wait for it to be fixed by Naim.

Thank you so much Simon. So it is the app. Which I was very sure !  I hope it can be fixed in a short period of time .

I did try all those things ! Thank you . But when my wife's iPhone that had not been updated worked with play lists but updated iPhone & iPad did not , I suspected the app. Simon confirms this . Thanks Simon .

If you have been careful and made a back up of your iPhone to your computer, you can regain the older version of the Naim App.

It also depends on which version of iTunes you have installed on your computer, to which your phone is backed up.

If you start iTunes and insure that Apps are one of the media sources listed, you can

1.  hook your phone to you computer

2. Delete the updated app from you iphone

3. On your computer, in iTunes, select the iPhone

4. Go to applications

5.  The apps on your computer should be displayed with a highlighted button which allows you to either

  a.  install or

  b.  remove

6 choose to install the OLDER version of the Naim app on your IOS device

7. Click on Sync on the lower right had portion of iTunes, and the OLDER version of the Naim App will be installed on your IOS device via your computer.

Hope this helps

I do manual iPhone backups on iTunes for that reason. This can allow you to roll back to a previous version. It's also useful for restoring playlists, which have long been very prone to corruption, as these are also backed up to iTunes with the app.

Naim is aware of the issue and working on an update to fix the playlist issue .

I'm surprised no one has commented on the new 5.8.1 app released earlier this week.

Phil is aware of the issue and Naim is working on a firmware update to the app that will fix the issue. They emailed me and said it should be out later this month .

You are right that Naim have a fix in testing now for your playlist issue, which afects new Unitis including the Core. The issue I was referring to is a different, long standing one where Naim app playlists can become corrupted. This issue has been around since the Naim app was released (replacing N-Stream) so I'm not convinced this new fix will solve it.

I'm having some minor issues with the latest update.  If I switch to another app and switch back to the Naim app the song progress bar is missing.  I have to hit the X at the top of the page then hit the song title bar down the bottom for it to re-open with the song progress bar.  Another thing, when listening to good old Radio Paradise, the song title can stick on the same song for loads of songs until I do the same thing, hit the X top right then reopen the Radio Paradise 'page' by clicking the song playing at the bottom of the screen.

I have individual playlists on ipad and iphone, they don't syncronise automatically. Which to me is good (mostly).

It would however be nice to be able to copy from one unit to the other, ideally by copying to a PC or the NAS, so that I can restore the lists from there in case they should become deleted by mistake or disappear.

I'm not talking about playlists created on the NAS.

Is this possible, and if yes, then how ??

Claus, If you want to transfer a playlist from the app on one device to another, play it. Then close the app on one device, open it on the other one, and save the play queue as a new playlist.

If you back up your iOS devices using iTunes, the app and it's playlists will be backed up there.

Thanks, that sounds pretty simple.
I don't back up with iTunes, but with the backup option in the settings menu, to iCloud. That should work as well, I guess.

I have never seen iCloud reported as a way to go back and you would be forced to restore everything to the past date, so would lose recent photos etc unless you saved them separately. ICloud doesn't let you roll back individual apps and they are incremental backups.

Anyway if you find it does work, please tell us!

I've never really looked at the iCloud backup options to be honest. The iTunes one is very easy to set up, I just do an occasional manual backup to it by connecting my phone to a MacBook.

In fact, I only did the backup once, when changing to a new iphone. So a complete backup.
Otherwise I occansionally copy the photos to my harddisk and that's it.

How can I copy contacts via iTunes? I have a standard win 7 pc that I can connect via usb to the phone.

I can't remember exactly what the iTunes backup does, If anything, with contacts. The iCloud backup deals with contacts so easily that I just use that.

Naim importer called me back on Thursday and said Naim is already beta testing a fix for the playlist issue. Should be released by the end of next week if everything goes well.
