Airplay issue with mu-so QB

Posted by: myoki on 02 October 2017

Hi Forum, I bought a QB last week and have an issue with Airplay playback.  When streaming using Airplay from iPad or Mac there is interference/crackling with the audio. The behaviour is consistent whether the Mac is connected by WiFi or ethernet.

The mu-so is connected by Ethernet to an Airport Express/time capsule network.  All other mu-so inputs (radio, UPNP, digital optical) play flawlessly. Also, the iPad and Mac stream Airplay without issue to other devices (Denon AVR, Apple TV, NAD D 3020). I have had a mu-so before and did not have this issue.

I have factory reset the mu- so QB, checked for firmware updates and tried all the troubleshooting tips I could find online.

Has anyone had a similar issue? Keen to determine whether it is a software issue that Naim or Apple will get to shortly or if the hardware is faulty and needs repair or replace. Have also sent in to Naim support.

many thanks in advance for any help.

Myoki, do you get the same issue if you Airplay to the Mu-So via a wireless network connection?

That may determine whether it's an issue with the Mu-So or the Apple AE.

Hi Richard.  Yes, just tested and it is the same interference whether the mu-so is connected wireless or wired.

OK thanks.  Let's hope Naim support can help out.

I had some terrible stability issues from my old iphone 6S to the qb. In the end the problem  turned out to be a faulty phone.

After exhausting troubleshooting and all tests suggesting the issue was with the QB rather than my network or iOS,  I returned it today and exchanged for another one.

Happy to report the second QB has no issues with Airplay playback, wired or wireless.

That's unlucky, but good news Myoki.  I'm glad you managed to get to the bottom of it and now have a properly working unit.

Happy days.  Looking forward to a good listen tonight. I wonder this may be the start of an expensive Naim hobby...

Almost certainly!
