RIP Tom Petty
Posted by: dayjay on 02 October 2017
It would appear that Tom Petty has passed away after a heart attack. If confirmed then this is dreadfully sad news and another legend lost to us at too young an age, I was lucky enough to watch Tom in London a few months ago; we'd gone to see Stevie Nicks who my wife loves but Tom blew her off stage. He is a great loss to those of us who love rock music.

Into The Great Wide Open. Rest easy Tom.
Farewell Tom and thank you for all your great music.
ewemon posted:Absolutely stunned by this news. Saw him numerous times throughout the years including his first UK tour when he blew Nils Lofgren off the stage. May he rest in peace and thank you for all the wonderful music over the years.
I also saw him on the same tour in Birmingham (UK) when I met him at Virgin records and he signed his first LP for me which I still have hanging, with pride, on my study wall. We had a chat and he came across as such a nice polite man and I have been a fan ever since.
Yes he blew Lofgren off the stage on that tour and I have seen him many a time since then. Some of the highlight gigs were when he toured with Dylan and the gig opened with Roger McGuinn then Petty and The Heartbreakers followed by Dylan who just sort of appeared on stage and when they played Mr Tambourine Man with McGuinn I was I heaven.... what a show! Also, a couple of years ago at the Royal Albert Hall when we were lucky to have great seats right up front and he brought tears to my eyes on some numbers as they played tracks that formed part of my life.
So sad and so young at 66!
I am truly saddened by this and can't stop thinking of him, his music and the times.

A truly talented, long-term contributor to much of the most beloved music of my life!
I'll take peace assuming that as prolific as Tom was there will be a fair amount of new, posthumous releases of his music.
For casual listeners of Petty, be sure to explore his band "Mudcrutch". Two albums of wonderful country rock, often with a psychedelic bend. These albums kinda flew under the radar but are as good as anything he did with the Heartbreakers or Travelling Wilburys.
Speaking of the Traveling Wilburys, only Jeff and Bob remain.
A crap way to start the day. TP was awesome - he has provided the soundtrack to pretty much the whole of my current relationship and we were fortunate enough to see the band in San Fran in 2008 then both of the Albert Hall shows in 2012. The Hyde Park show this summer was a masterpiece - loved it when he and Stevie Nicks duetted - we assumed might be the last time he would tour Europe but to lose his so soon is gutting. He joins the other non-Travelling Wilburys at rest - Tom, Roy and George will be harmonising as we speak.
He was just the greatest. Everything he released was absolutely top notch. Simple, catchy and wonderfully arranged songs that always make you feel good. Sad loss.
Great memories - we were about 10 rows back. He won't be coming around here no more but we have such an awesome body of work to remember him by
Very sad news. One of the true greats. Saw him on Dylan Tour and at Albert Hall. Absolutely brilliant live.
Massive shock.
Echoing all of the sentiments paying tribute, very sad news indeed. Full Moon Fever was one of my fav albums when at college - and still is.
RIP, Great artist
The first time I saw Tom and the Heartrbreakers was at Knebworth in 1978, they played a superb set. A truly great songwriter who will be sadly missed.
What a gift to humanity and what a loss to hear of his departure.
I'd never expected to hear this. What a damned year.
RIP Tom....
