My Uniti Atom is here and it sound fabulous !!!!

Posted by: Bouba on 05 October 2017

Hey everybody,

After a very long wait, my Atom finally hit its shelves yesterday evening, and I'm really glad to find out it absolutely desserved waiting that long.

'Sounds dope through my B&W PM1

I'd like some advices though, even if this ain't my first Naim kit (the Atom replaces a full system comprised of a DAC V1, NAP 100 and a Qute2) as regarding one:

1. Installation : My hi-fi racks have 3 shelves, it's actually like a kind of longer than higher cupboard to accomodate for the various Equipments with a little space to allow air flowing around; all built-in in massive oaks, and a large top plate thick by 5 centimeters and able to support even the heaviest amps

I was wondering though, whether it'd be better to place the Atom on the top shelf, or rather within/onto one of the shelves beneath, because I find the unit so beautiful that I thought to myself "it'd be a pity to "hide" it to some extent, by putting it on one those shelves located under the top platter; which leads to my 2nd questions;

2. Does the unit heat as much as the UQ2 or will it run much cooler ?

And one last thing : I'm a cleanness maniac, and hate dust; the unit being all black, and i'm especially worring about that front LCD bright display, will it attrackt finger prints, dusts and smudges like a magnet if I install it center-stage on the top platter of my Hi-Fi rack ?

Your advices will be very much appreciated.

In the meantime, I just enjoy every notes of music being played at home since yesterday evening: Raphael Saadicq did never sound so good to my ears: thrilling musical experience !!!

P.S: please forgive me if I misspelled some words, English is not my mother's tongue.

Many thanks in advance for your feedback.

Bouba,

If it sounds dope it must be good.

A few more of these "I love my Atom" threads -- and Naim will add another 20% to the retail price.  [Cross-reference to "Uniti price hike" thread.]

Just a quick question though for those of you who have very large music library as I do:

how can I play the entire library in random mode like I used to with my UnitiQute 2 when streaming from a Synology NAS. I would like the Atom to stream randomly files stored on my nas. However, can’t see any button nor option for this on the remote itself or within the app

Any help would be really appreciated

The browse etc. options you see in the app will depend on how you have configured the server software on your NAS drive. I believe that the synology NAS drives have their own media server software and can also support Minimserver. You don't say which server you have been using but I can only imagine that there must have been an option to select/queue all tracks and use the random play option in the app.

With Synology's 'Media Server'  you need to pre-select some albums & random play,  I do that for my party playlists.   I believe its the same if I remember correctly when I used Minimserver.    As for a selection of random tracks taken from the complete NAS,  I've never found such a feature & not sure I would use it.  Henrix, Telemann, Krall & Traveling Wilburys don't gell as a play list in my house

Minimserver can show a listing of all tracks, and the app can play them, but with a limit of 500 tracks in a play queue. There used to be a workaround on the old streamers where, if you started play using the remote instead of the app, you could queue your entire library, bypassing the 500 track limit, but the new Unitis can't do this with their different remote.

Many thanks for your replies

I’m still looking for a workaround to play the whole library without being limited to the 500 tracks of a playlist. Don’t know what the Minimserver is as my UQ2used to play all tracks stored on my Synology DS215j using the units remote

The NAS itself have some features to enable building smart playlists that can be retrieved the, on the Atom

but apart from that I don’t see how to work this out....

within the naim app itself there is no button nor feature to enable this...

‘I get rid of my previous minx XI precisely because of that issue:no actual random play of tracks

it’d be great if naim could bring this feature back

Without the old remote control workaround, I don't think there's any way to do this. You could always use the app feedback thing to put in a feature request to Naim.

Well thanks everybody for your help, seems Naim did forget about users with large music Library, this is going to give me headaches for the next weeks to come. In the past, I just sat down press play on the remote to instantly listen to music without having to go through my whole Library to select whatever track i wanted to be played through my former UQ2.

Also, I came to find out that i can access to my NAS server using the Naim app; however, the dedicated input/server icon just does not display on the LCD screen of the Atom. Is that normal ? I did expect to see a dedicated icon for UPNP server on the front panel of the unit itself; to enable me browsing in the available inputs using the remote instead of the app, but when reading the support section of the uniti, it says that UPNP is available only through the app.

Or should I do something special in the settings to have my server listed among the available entries displayed on the front panel ?

No there is nothing you can do as Naim decided that browsing your UPNP library, using the fancy new remote control, is no longer a requirment. Basically, the remote is good for volume control or putting the unit to stand-by.

I was also very annoyed at the lack of remote control features. Who know, it might come back at a later firmware update. I wasn't going to hold my breath however, and went for a SuperUniti instead.

This is indeed quite annoying and to be honest, i found it a little bit "mean" to ignore that not everybody is using only the remote or only the app.

Most of the time, while playing music, i'll personaly be using both.

I've also been quite surprised when i opened up the box on Saturday to find out that, although I ordered the HDMI version, my Atom came in the box accompanied with an HDMI card that needs to be installed on the unit by the user.

Did yours arrive the same, i.e. the HDMI card not installed on the unit but simply put in the box, up to you to install it upon reception !!!!

Am i supposed to open the unit and install the HDMI myself; i don't think so and that's not really serious. Don't know if that's Focal (naim French distributor) or Naim's fault but quite disappointed on that regard.

Otherwise, the unit is playing perfectly and it sill sounds great, i'm just puzzled they removed some key features that made the former UQ usage so simple and straight forward (like the actual shuffle play mode or the ability to select all inputs diretly using the remote). And that HDMI card put in a box, letting the user install it himself is even worse. I think that at the price, the least they could have done is to make sure the Customer only have to plug the unit and press play.

Wow I was not aware that Naim were just adding the HDMI card to the box and letting the user install it themselves. That would go agains anything I've read or heard about how Naim usually operate.

The Atom I had for a week was the one without HDMI so I can't really comment on that.

The one plus side I can see is that people who bought the non-HDMI version might be able to order the card separately at a later date if they want that option.

Absolutely agree, that's why I specified I don't know whether it's Naim or Focal the French distributor to be blamed for that.

But in my case, I just wanted it already fitted and not simply included within the box. That ain't serious at all !!!!!

You shouldn't have to instal the HDMI card yourself, they are supposed to come fully installed. I think this must be an omission by your dealer or distributor - or maybe Naim?

Posted on: 09 October 2017 by Richard Dane

I've just been told by Naim that the first units to go out didn't have the cards fitted but the cards were included with the order so the dealer could fit them for the customer.  I would talk to your supplying dealer. It is supposedly fairly straightforward (Naim have instructions), but they should be aware of ESD precautions.

Shocking!

Sounds like poor communication between Naim and dealer(s), if the the HDMI card is in the Atom box then they will only find it if told beforehand or are installing for the customer.

The dealer should be fine so long as they ensure they take ESD precautions and the mains plug is not connected when the card is fitted.

Gazza, I would guess that something was missed in comms between Naim, the distributor and the dealer, possibly in the rush to get units out to customers as quickly as possible. I would advise taking the issue up with your dealer or distributor.

Congratulations and most of all just position and enjoy for a week or so before tweaking, so enjoy as long as the damn app don't f up.

Note maybe leave it longer as it takes upto 4 weeks to really start opening up.

I had the Atom and Nova, would not say either runs hot and for me at the moment the sit on a glass table, so plenty of air.

OCD no no - its a pain, i found i just don't bother cleaning it too often, as i always end up missing a bit then it looks odd.

I have my atom a week now , my dealer did install the hdmi for me.

for random playing I took iTunes on my mac (with Airplay)

You need to be able to play random tracks with selected genres. Logitech Media Server (Squeezebox) has been able to do this since its beginning. Now that Naim have finally become Roon friendly you will be able to do it as well albeit with a little more fiddling around.

I couldn't imagine NOT being able to do this with a streamer.

Posted on: 09 October 2017 by Bouba

I just talk to my dealer and indeed, they were not aware that the HDMI card was in a separate box for them to fit it within the unit.

Now I just don't want to send the unit back again (600 kms from my place) with all the hussle and risks that implies.

But to be honest I'm quite upset that I don't get what I pay, i.e. a unit with fully fitted HDMI option (not Something thrown in the box ) for because of poor communication between Naim and its dealers.

They should have offered to arrange a courier to collect, they should then fit for you and then redelivered at no cost to yourself. Call them again and insist, this can be done in a few days at most.

Posted on: 09 October 2017 by Bouba

I just did. Expecting my dealer's feedback.

Posted on: 09 October 2017 by Bouba

Well my dealer is arranging the return to its store and will send me back my unit once equipped with the shipped HDMI circuit.
