Latest naia Units displays impossible to turn off?
Posted by: Mirko on 05 October 2017
Hey guys!
I just switched my ND5-XS combo against a Unit Atom and can't believe that the super bright and therefore annoying display can't be switched off?!?!
Already contacted naim about this and they responded its not possible at the moment to turn it off. I mean are they serious? Everybody using naim since years is used to the super discreet green display that can be turned off or turns itself off.
Am I the only person annoyed about this or do you guys feel the same way..?
Cheers from Hamburg, Germany
I agree, not being able to turn the display, and other irritating bright lights, off whenever required would be a deal breaker for me.
Yes. And there are some other quirks too.
- if the unit is connected to your home network via wifi and it undergo a power off and on, it would not get itself connected again.
- browsing of upnp folders via the remote.
I hope these will be addressed with future firmware updates.
Agreed. There must be a technical reason why this is not activated from day one, but it is annoying. Still sounds rather good though ...
The ability to turn off the display is coming in a future firmware upgrade. It seems a really stupid omission, like introducing a car where the full beam is on all the time. It would have been far better to introduce it from day 1.
As HH says above, I have been told that it's planned to come with a future firmware release.
Just showing the products were launched way before final development
Now customers face the various issues while prices are increasing
Both a dealbreaker for me
Thanks for your relies guys!!
I hope all Uniti buyers see it as a no go and write them so it gets solved asap. As said.. this fancy screen is minoring my listening experience even though it sounds incredible for the price and size...
Just get a sock and hang it over the display. Problem solved. When the firmware is updated, you can put it back in the drawer.
You are introducing a new dimension here, to the sock photos, HH.
What would worry me most about a shiny display, is the attractiveness to thieves. I would be nervous.
hmmm... I was one of the first to receive an Atom, and after a few days with it I decided it was not for me. I found small gripes with the new Uniti range that I was not happy about. And a few features that were advertised on the naim site last year, but then omitted from the final release. A lot of people on here gave me a hard time when I voiced my frustration.
Funny, now I see more and more people on here with those same observations.
It is an interesting day on the forum. In this thread it seems that the new Uniti range should have been delayed until everything works like everybody expects, so launch should be around 2020 probably later. And now or rather in a few weeks the new Unities get Roon something all the roon ravers want badly. Actually a subset of Roon ravers also want the same for the 272 and Naim has to come up with a hardware upgrade for the old platform. Until all 3 models in the uniti range was released other people filled the forum with posts about how terrible it was that units were delayed, but maybe they had excepted even more delays if they had known about the uggly display bug?

I had a demo of the Nova a few days ago and the dealer found a setting where the display would turn off automatically after selected periods of time. There was aslo an option to show the time only.

can you please find out how to do so because neither naim nor the German naim distributor can give me a solution on this..

Possibly he was referring to the 'Auto standby time' adjustment which is in Settings > Other settings in the app.
He did both from the App. The screen was turned off with auto standby, the shortest wait was 5 minutes if I remember rightly.
Can anyone from Naim verify the ability to set the screen 8nto standby, I can only find reference to Auto stand by for the whole unit, which means, no music?

To be clear, Standby mode turns off the device, not just the screen.
I found this an odd omission too.
I'd also like to be able to specify a custom image to display if no artwork is available instead of the bland pair of quavers.
