Uniti - HDMI to TV
Posted by: Obsydian on 07 October 2017
Out of the box this work fine, my tv has ARC support, I could simply quick select speaker output to the Nova job done.
But now whatever I do the TV will no longer detect the HDMI input, tried a Nova reset to manually setup with the TV, but every which way the Nova does not play ball.
TV wise nothing has changed, only the Naim app software updates but see no link there.
Anyone any ideas, having the same, having no issues or just finding HDMI yet another input not being used.
Oh f. Now the Nova is all lights and no action, swapped back to Tidal track shows but no sound and then froze, cannot power down, can't do anything !!!
Have you unplugged the Nova from the mains, left it a minute and then plugged it in again?

Not seen this problem on the forum with hdmi. If you cannot sort it try the optical, mine works fine, but if this is a bug it needs sorting.
Had the exact same problem on my Nova. The HDMI connection worked fine for a few days with my TV (via ARC HDMI). Then for no reason it just stopped. As soon as I select the HDMI input via the Naim App (or Remote), the screen shows 'no signal' even when TV is on. The Nova then freezes and while the lights on screen remain on, I cannot power down or do anything. The system just hangs and the only way is to power off from the mains. Everything works ok after that but as soon as I select HDMI then the problem comes back.
If this description matches what you are facing then it is likely the same issue. I recommend you get in touch with your dealer to explain the situation.
I have been in touch with my Naim dealer and they in turn got in touch with Naim. The 'diagnosis' was a faulty HDMI board / card. I will be getting a replacement Nova.

It's probably a bug rather than a hardware fault so getting a new unit probably won't help. I suggest you should report it to Naim using the feedback option in the Naim app. I know these get read in Salisbury and it's a more certain route to the developers than through your dealer.

Will certainly do that as well and report the issue directly, thanks David :-)
Thanks all and Yiannisk does sound the same issue.
I ended up powering off for a while and thought will do a full factory reset, at least now it responds and was fine playing Tidal and USB, did not dare select HDMI. Will try another day.
This really really pissed me off, too often I get a quite time to listen and either the app flips out or I end up resetting the Nova - really ruins the whole experience and each time (as much as I love the Nova and Atom prior), is leading me to ditching it.
Just when I think it's ok all is forgiven, Naim update the app and it's mullered or Tidal or the hardware - either way it's like a school kid go code and program better.
Anyway once again a nice relaxing me and Naim time turned into over an hour stressing.
Dave will also make a call Monday or email later.

Totally empathise with you :-) you should have seen my face of horror when I first saw the Nova freeze after selecting HDMI. I purchased the Nova only a week ago hence why I did not risk it and contacted my dealer straight away. If this is a software bug then I am happy to wait but after they (the dealer) got in touch with Naim to explain the issue, the diagnosis pointed to a hardware fault. Either way, I am not risking it with such a high cost purchase.
It sounds like we are having the same problem. After powering off from the mains, the Nova reboots and works just fine as long as I avoid selecting HDMI. Other than the HDMI freeze, everything works perfectly on my end.
I also freezes with spdif/ BNC from Core, but I was told this was my router......I was not and still not convinced.

Hi Gazza,
I have successfully run the Core BNC S/PDIF directly into the digital input on my Atom, no problems.
Select the Atom digital input and then use the Naim App to select the Core / album / track and start the Core playing.
For me I am not sure what benefits it brings as I can use the Servers option and use the app to play the tracks from the Core on the Atom. My dealer suggested that using the Server option was better as this used the Atom's internal buffer, where as the direct connection relied on the Core feeding the Atom at just the right rate.
Like you I find it hard to see how the router can impact a direct connection between Core and Nova.
Simon
It’s only when I finish an album it all hangs up, as I had a cheap BNC to BNC cable and could hear no real difference I have given up for the time being.
Same again, decided after fully resetting everything tried again Nova again went into meltdown.
Yes emailed Naim.
Concerned the Nova has fried or damaged my TV HDMi input.
Hi,
Having chased the issue that Obsydian raised by email with us then unfortunately it's not something that we are aware of as a software bug so all I can suggest to him and Yiannisk is getting the unit back to the dealer for exchange as it is more likely to be a hardware fault...

Many thanks for the input Phil, I have already been in touch with my local dealer who in turn confirmed with Naim that this is a hardware fault. Excellent customer service and replacement is on the way.

Ok but I'm reaching the end of the line, between the software and now hardware the whole experience is dreadful.
Love the Nova, amazing when it works, but always ruined by issues, like it's a prototype not ready for production.
Yiannis - let us know how you get on, i am awaiting confirmation from the dealer, BUT skeptical that if the fault if unknown and it happens to the new unit, then what ???
Seems like public beta find and fix.

This sounds like nonsense to me. I know the Atom has a big buffer because I remember reading a posting from Naim that said the Tidal strategy of the new Unitis was to get the whole track over to the Atom asap and play it from the buffer. Apparently you can disconnect the Atom from the network while it is playing and it will play on to the end of the track.
Why would Naim not use the same approach to upnp, especially as there could be home network congestion if people are using wifi rather than Ethernet?
Maybe Phil might comment?

Will report back on Sat when I receive the replacement unit from my dealer. To be honest we do not know how isolated (or not) the HDMI issue is beyond our two cases. We could just have been the unlucky ones. Either way, I discussed the exact same concern with my dealer: what if the replacement unit exhibits the same fault. My dealer confirmed that in such a case they would of course take it back.
So will see how the new unit fares and will report back.

Yiannis, any update all resolved or not.
I was expecting the replacement to arrive last Saturday but I unfortunately found out that it had to be delayed for at least a week. I can definitely understand (and justify) this considering the demand and complex production process etc. Sadly though, I ran out of time. I am travelling soon on a work assignment that will take me abroad for most of the month. I felt that it would be risky to wait so long before testing the replacement to find out if it works ok etc.
The issue I experienced with the Nova only appeared after 3-5 days of normal use so I am conscious that once a replacement arrived, I would need about a week of use before I could put my mind at ease that all is well. With this in mind plus the additional delay, I have sadly ran out of time and I felt that the safe choice was to return the nova.
I would like to emphasise that both Naim and my dealer have been great. In my opinion, a new product line with such additional functionality (and hence technological complexity) will have some 'teething' issues at the beginning. I think this is normal and most likely only affects a handful of cases.
The Uniti offers functionality that is (to my knowledge) extremely rare and quite amazing. The nova is basically 4 devices in one and with incredible automation. I could start and stop playing music without having to flick any switch, no worries about standby, power on etc. Roon integration... amazing. I could go on.
Despite my bad luck, my plan is to wait for a while and then revisit the Uniti range.
Good news! The replacement arrived early so I was able to take it home before my business trip. All connected and functioning perfectly so far. HDMI works perfectly.
I will have the chance to monitor how things go for a few days. So far so good and very happy indeed.
Well done Yiannis glad to hear it is resolved, I have a longer wait but keep us posted.
Question though do you have issues In terms of volume when swapping say Tidal, USB to HDMI and Back.
Just tested a bit with Airplay - HDMI - Spotify. It appears that Airplay has 'priority' over volume level setting. I launched itunes on my Mac and I started streaming to the Nova. I used the itunes volume slider (on the mac) to set the volume at say 35. If I stop the playback and then switch input to Spotify or HDMI the volume level carries over (35). Conversely though, If i start streaming via spotify and set the volume to say 25, once I stop and start streaming via itunes again, the volume on the Nova reverts to 35. I suspect this is to do with airplay and how the volume slider level transmits to the Nova.
If I go from HDMI to Spotify the volume levels remain at how they were set for each.
Not sure if that was what you were looking for. I do not think the above is a bug but rather a way that airplay 'dominates' the volume slider of the Nova.

It is nonsense, the Unitis have a new architecture for streaming and pull the track back as quickly as possible and play from memory. I saw a prototype trace ... and I don’t think this has changed in production, as this is a big plus with the new architecture, including the removing vagaries of boutique Ethernet cables etc ... also it’s not so much congestion... it’s more about throughput consistency and latency variation as opposed to congestion and dropped data.
