4.4 upgrade Access Denied
Posted by: DelR on 15 October 2017
Have finally got round to updating my NDX to Version 4.4, however I keep encountering Access Denied when trying to open the NaimStreamerUpdater.
Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this issue?
DELR, I've moved this to a more appropriate forum for you. If you don't get any useful answers then best contact Naim support tomorrow.
Its never happened to me & as a beta tester I've lost count the number of times I've done it. I would guess you have not connected something correctly. Have you downloaded the correct USB driver for your PC/Mac/Laptop ??? Do you have the NDX connected to your PC/Mac or Laptop over both the USB cable & ethernet cable ???
Thank you Richard.
Mike-B, I think I have the right driver installed. The laptop in connected to the NDX via USB, and the NDX is connected to a switch via Ethernet.
That means its making the ethernet connection to the laptop over wireless, I am led to believe this can be done although personally I've never done it - have you followed the IP address seeking instructions ?? "If using a wireless connection, find and make a note of your products IP address. This is found by selecting List > Factory Settings > System Status > IP."
What's your laptops OS system, Windows or Mac
The laptop is on Windows 10. I will try tomorrow with a wired Ethernet connection to the laptop. Thank you.
OK, I'm Win-10 & I always use ethernet & that always works for me, so a good starting point. But double check that http://www.silabs.com/Support%...210x_VCP_Windows.zip has installed OK, or simpler to just run the install again.
I don't think this is anything to do with wifi.
Are you saying that when you try to run the updater on your PC you get an "access denied" message or does that come at a later stage?

Hi David, I'm also not convinced its wifi, but ethernet is just simpler, it finds the players IP address automatically rather than the need to enter it. Per my first post, I think its just something not connected or set up correctly & I would just re-follow the instructions path & double check the USB driver is installed, then no reason why it shouldn't work.
Every update I’ve done as part of the beta team, and there have been loads, have been with the laptop using WiFi, and the streamer wired. No problems at all.

What's this about entering IP addresses? I've done updates using both WiFi and Ethernet, and the process has been identical.
Worth trying it from an administrator account rather than a standard user account.

Yes that is a thought, especially if the OP can't even get the updater to run, which is the way I read his posting.

I'm just reading the PC install instructions for wireless connection see the .pdf. I've never tried it myself & always used an ethernet which finds IP address itself..
Hi, thanks for the replies. The issue arises when I click on the updated. I will try it while wired this evening.
I have always done updates with the laptop wireless and have never had to enter the streamer’s IP address. If it were me, I’d drop a line to, or call, Phil Harris at Naim. He will tell you what to do.
This is nothing to do with wired or wifi. The OP gets "Access denied" when he clicks on the updater and it won't run. Assuming that he has downloaded the right file from the Naim website, the "Access denied" message is his computer telling him that it can't run the file (e.g. Because it's corrupted) or that he doesn't have the authority to run the file (e.g. Because he isn't in an administrator's account).
Once the updater is running, we can look at the network connections if necessary.

Rereading the OP it does read like it could be requiring administrator permission & its a Win-10 message not a Naim Updater message. Admin permission is something I have set so never see this other than a pop up to say open as administrator.
A wilde gues here if it is not the probem with needing to have administrator rights, but that usually gives another error message. If the updater is downloaded as a zip file, and I seem to remember it is because there are more than one file. If so you should unzip the files in the zip file before starting the firmware update program.

Also a good thought, although I thought if you clicked on a zip, windows unpacks it and opens an explorer window? But I'm using Windows 7 so maybe it's different with W10.

Yes it must be unpacked & opened which auto installs it in the Win-10 OS 'Programs' section. But that's all inc in the Instructions .pdf
Hi, thanks for your help, have been able to complete the update this evening by opening as Administrator
Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
Excellent. I'm glad the crowd-sourced brains of the Forum were able to help you.
