ProAc K6/K8

Posted by: Chris Bell on 15 October 2017

Listening the astonishing Tablet 10's, I'm curious to learn more about K6/K8 reference speakers from ProAc.  Anybody own or heard them?  If I could have the sound of the Tablet 10, only with more scale I'd be buyer for my main system.

K6 (driven by 272/555/250DR) - sublime, sensational! I've only heard the Tablet 10s at the dealers, but they share the same ProAc sound signature (I came to the K6 from D20r). Naim and ProAc go together like...... (insert whatever cliché suits).

I imagine the answer to your question is arrange demonstrations. Looking at your profile I would guess that, if funds and space present no problem, K8s may fit the bill.

I'm surprised by the lack of response! I'm certain I've seen contributions from K6 owners over the past 12 months (perhaps they don't visit regularly), and I would have been very interested to hear from any Naim owners running K8s. Don't give up hope yet Chris.

I owned ProAc CP6 & CP8 models which already obsolete from the ProAc, using the Carbon Fibre drivers, which I think they still the best speaker from ProAc. If you prefer to go for K8, perhaps you can try to see any new old stock for Carbon Pro 6 or Carbon Pro 8 at the dealer side. I am sure you will never look back to K6 or K8 or any models from Response Series.

If someone said Naim & ProAc match well, then I would say ProAc Carbon Pro series are the perfect match for ProAc Models, and one of the best match around Speaker's brands.

Remarks: I wrote to Stewart Tylor for asking any New Series from ProAc to replace Carbon Pro Series but no reply yet until now (before he shall replied me within a day or two, even though I am just the end user).

My understanding is that the K series is the replacement for the Carbon Pro, with slightly different porting arrangement and Kevlar instead of carbon cones. Not sure ProAc are planning to introduce their successor just yet!

How's the dispersion on the ribbon tweeter?  Ribbon speakers can have very narrow sweet spots.

K6/8 are not the replacement model for Carbon Pro Series, as far I know. Anyway I think they are no the same class of product. Listen then you will know.

BNN, Can you elaborate on the differences?

In the past, ProAc speakers require to pair/match with care, if you tune the mid-low well the top end may go slightly dry, for example the D28 model, this was overcome by D30R with Carbon Fibre driver. For me, after listened to the Carbon Pro Series (Carbon Fibre type of Bass Drivers), I really felt that I cannot look back to the existing or currently ProAc models on using different type of Bass drivers. You may think that I am subjective on this. Yes it is. Carbon Pro has the fast & control low frequency and Stuart able to tune and overcome the existing ProAc 'bulks' (a bit dry on the Top), which you have top end mid low & low freq control, but you could have sweet top end which never sacrifices the overall balance sound. If you have the chance to listen to Carbon Pro Series then I am sure you can tell the differences too. K Series is just slightly better than the Response series but still far if compare to Carbon Pro Series. HiFi is subjective.

Subjective indeed. I can't comment upon the superiority of the Carbon Series, but to describe the K series as 'slightly better' than the Response series is patently ridiculous. I've heard the 20, 30 and 48 models, and the K6 simply leaves them all for dead, using whatever HiFi techno babble you care for.

If the Carbons were so good, why do you think Mr Tyler discontinued them and introduced the K series, using Kevlar instead of Carbon Fibre?

After being thoroughly impressed by the Proac D30R when I heard them, I have now been waiting patiently for just over 3.5 years for the same well known Naim/Proac/B&W dealer in east London to call me back with a date when they are able to demonstrate the Proac K6 speaker.

Good job I'm not in a hurry, having bought the ARTs about 5 months later.

If you do succeed in hearing a pair, I'd be really interested to learn about it.

Best regards, FT

Using price as the arbiter, I guess that's correct. Have a look at their website and make up your own mind!
