UnitiAtom multiroom query
Posted by: blag on 16 October 2017
I have just set-up my UnitiAtom, and everything is working just fine, but...
I cannot see the other 'multiroom' devices.
I have a UnitiQute two floors below, and a NAC 272 one floor below. These two 'see' each other in multiroom via the naim app on my android 'phone, but the Atom is not visible as a multiroom device from either the UQ or the 272.
Conversely, the Atom does not 'see' the UQ or the 272 in its multiroom panel.
Are the 'legacy' devices multiroom compatible with the new Uniti range and vice-versa?
I have not set-up Built-in Chromecast as an input in the Atom, and I have tried using the Atom as a server - and not as a server - without any effect. I have factory re-set the Atom, and re-set the naim app on my 'phone but the result is always the same: it's as if the devices are using separate multiroom protocols.

New and old Naim streamers are not currently able to work together in multiroom mode, although you should be able to see and control all of them individually via the app. There will hopefully be firmware/app updates in the pipeline to enable full multiroom compatibility.

Thanks for the reply CHRIS SU. Naim's online support states: Uniti Atom‘s streaming card will allow it to Multiroom with all other Naim streaming products
That seems to me to suggest that there is compatibility, because I assumne that the streaming card is integral to the Atom.
By way of a response to another related FAQ i.e. The Naim app can't see Uniti Atom in the room select menu, naim's on-line support states: There are many possible reasons for this, if you can see Airplay but not devices in the room menu this indicates that UPnP discovery is being blocked by your router. Try using a cable modem or another router as a start.
I cannot see Airplay in the rooms select menu, but, in fact, I don't know how to get to the room select menu in the Atom.
On my network the Atom seems to be the exception. Since the UQ and the 272 can both see each other without problems, I can only assume that UPnP is not being blocked on my network. I have tried both a wired and a wireless connection for the Atom, but without any change.
It was always Naim's intention to allow multiroom between old and new streamers, but it doesn't work at the moment. We'll just have to hope that they can get it sorted and release an update to enable it.
There is no Airplay input as such. Just start playing something from your Airplay device, and send it to the Atom from there.

Hi. No Apple or Airplay devices here.

HI Blag,
my understanding is he same as ChrisSU - multi room is on the development path for new Uniti range, however it will need a firmware update to work with the legacy products.
Little unsure of your last comment, (I uses apple iphone/iPad/ however this also works from android devices). Get you phone to start playing the music you wish to listen to, then select the option on the phone screen, you may have to press and click a bit to find it, and the name of your Atom will be there under airplay. Select the Atom and after a momentary delay the phone speaker will go silent and the music start playing out of he Atom speakers..
i hope this helps

The devil seems to be in the detail here. The question to which the answer above is given reads “Is Multiroom going to work with all other Naim products?”, not “Does Multiroom work...”. So the answer says it will work in the future, not that it works now.

It is my understanding that multi room answer is YES
however for the New Uniti range to multi room with the existing products, the existing products need a firmware update.
WIth all the Atom, Nova, Start product launches, they will have been focusing on their delivery. As an aside I see that there is a iOS app 5.8.2 released today.
You will need to ask Naim what their expected release date is for the next firmware update.

Eoink. How perceptive you are. Of course, now that I think about it, the wording means exactly what you say. It indicates that at some time in the future...

Does the Airplay method you have outlined serve as a workaround? By this I mean: will I be able to play the same tracks (from a NAS) simultaneously on my three streamers (i.e. Atom, UQ, and NAC272)?

I think perhaps there is some confusion about the jargon we are using here! Airplay is Apple's proprietary system for playing from iTunes and other apps on iOS devices and Macs, and that is what I was referring to above. Streaming to one or more (Naim) streamers from a NAS which stores your music, and uses UPnP server software to do this, is what is generally referred to as Streaming Audio. Two different things entirely.
I do not have more than one naim streamer, but my understanding is that it makes a difference what device is controling the multiroom session. If you multiroom from the old streamers to the new streamers it is my understanding it works with the current firmeware. I can however be totally wrong. Naim is testing firmware for the old streamers and mu-sos so a good idea to ask when it will be released, or if it is bpossible to get the beta code.

Thanks Claus, I've just looked a bit more closely. Here my Nova can't see any others, the NDX can see the Qbs, but not the Nova, the Qbs can see the NDX and the Nova for multiroom. The Nova is now playing slaved to a Qb, how interesting.
I believe Naim will solve this in a future update. I have a Uniti Atom and a Qb and I can start multiroom from the Qb to the Atom, but not the other way around ...
Hi,
Multiroom works for me with Atom and NDX. In both directions; started from NDX with Atom as a multiroom player and vice versa.

That is interesting. naim have confirmed to me that they are working on firmware updates for 'legacy' streamers. Therefore, I am wondering what versions of firmware you have a) on your NDX; b) on the Atom?
Also what version of the naim app are you using. and on what platform?
During the process of familiarising myself with the Atom, I seem to have encountered an anomaly, and wondered if anyone has any insight:
I have disabled the Spotify input on the Atom, and it does NOT appear in the naim app as a 'source/input'. TIDAL is selected as an active input, and appears in the naim app.
However, on the Atom's display, the TIDAL icon does NOT show, but the Spotify icon does. I have not re-named either input.
Firstly, I don't have a Spotify account hence disabled. From the naim app (Android) TIDAL works fine, but I am unable to select TIDAL as a source from the Atom screen via the remote, because there is no icon for TIDAL. Furthermore, if I select the Spotify - in the hope that the Atom is confused - I am then presented with a display that asks me if I want to play some music on Spotify. So, where is TIDAL, and why is Spotify visible on the front of the Atom if I have disabled it?
If you have an answer, please be so kind as to enlighten me.

Hi [@mention:53097173002359078],
i am away for work at the moment, back with the Atom on Friday.
I will check out about the disabled Spotify icon. And report back how my Atom behaves.
On the Tidal, you can only play Tidal via the naim app. When the current play lists finishes it is 'cleared' for the Atom so there is nothing to play even if you could select Tidal from the front screen. Naim are aware of the Tidal play list clearing once the last track has played as this has been raised by other on the Forum, however I have no knowledge if this will be changed in future releases.
I hope this helps.

I see the logic re: the TIDAL icon not appearing on the screen. And I may have answered my own question!!
Here's my reasoning: I suppose because Spotify is now built-in to the Atom (no need to use Spotify Connect - I believe), then the icon is a 'permanent' feature on the home screen, as is Bluetooth.
