Noisy Core?

Posted by: Frances on 19 October 2017

I recently took a break from ripping CDs, fiddling with metadata or listening to music on my new Core.  Then I discovered that if I simply sit on the sofa with nothing else happening, the Core makes an ongoing noise*.  It's not the hard disc doing anything (I think), it's just a noticeable background.  Hard to describe - not a hum as such, a bit similar to the noise our DVD player used to make when it was turned on but not doing anything, a sort of quiet chugging along.

It makes the same noise whether it is turned on or in standby.  Unplugging it from the wall stops it.

It's a bit irritating.

Surely it shouldn't be doing this?  I expected it to be completely quiet when not in use, like the rest of my equipment. What does it need to be doing when in standby that could possibly make a noise?

*It makes the noise if I'm not sitting on the sofa, as well.

I would contact your dealer my Core is silent whether in standby or switched on in fact it rarely makes any noise whilst ripping I,m using a Seagate drive as recommended by Naim.

Assuming you have a hard disc in there, rather than an SSD, then I am afraid what you are hearing is right. The hard disc runs 24/7 in both fully on and network standby modes. If you put it into deep sleep, which you do by holding the power button in for a few seconds until there is a relay click, then the HDD stops but you can't wake it with the app. You have to turn it on by pressing the power button.

It also runs fairly hot, but if you have used the recommended hard disc then it will be fine as both the continuous running and the temperature are within spec.

i started with a HDD, but changed it for an SSD after a couple of months. The Core is then quiet except when ripping CDs and runs cool too.

Assuming a degree of similarity, at least in principle, with any other Naim server (I use an NS01), the solution I adopted was to locate it in another room with an Ethernet cable passing through a 1/4" inner diameter plastic tube through the wall to connect it to the streamer.

I cannot hear my Core unless it’s ripping some cd,s which I assume is due to weight, poor dimensional aspects, but this is rare. I also have the prescribed Seagate pipeline HDD, designed for being quiet and low speed.
