Mojo/poly
Posted by: jon h on 20 October 2017
Am contemplating adding a poly to my mojo. That would make a roon endpoint, I think? Anyone done this?
Jon, can you please elaborate - I have no idea what you are talking about ...
I asked this a couple of days ago on this thread: https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...28#72103499251391728
No positive response, though some speculative natter re using Poly with other devices as well.
Maybe Poly is too new yet. It certainly begs some real life reviews, and not just against other portable devices like phones.

Sure, according to Chord the Poly can act as a Roon endpoint. I guess not many people have tried it at this point. But the YouTube video on the Chord site suggests that once the Poly is set to act as a Roon endpoint, it can be selected via the Roon app as any other endpoint. Poly and Mojo also look very nice, I think!

Chord mojo -- excellent little pocket DAC thingy. Chord poly adds on to it and adds in streaming/wifi etc. Also makes it a roon endpoint. Given I have a mojo, it seems a fairly neat way of getting a roon endpoint onto my system
Thank you for your explanation, sorry I can’t be of any assistance to you.

Not sure if poly + mojo can be powered whilst doing this. Will investigate
It only became available in the UK this week I think.

My own thought was to use Poly with Dave, using its micto-USB output to Dave, and Mojo's charger to the charging micro-USB, though that would be subject to confirming there is nothing odd about the charging connections. (I don't know if the charger would affect sound quality if connected that way, and of course there could be other third-party charging options)
For me that is nothing to do with Roon capability, but whether as a source it is as good as my present but with better library options, or better quality, and with a simple ability to go mobile if I want, seemlessly.

The recent What Hi-Fi review says no.
”Chord’s Poly and Mojo won’t be for everyone. It’s lacking a dedicated app, as well as a mains-powered option and accessibility to physical inputs to increase its practicality within a hi-fi system.”
Another post on this subject just now in the Chord DACs thread, giving more detail.
I heard the Mojo-Poly today at the Windsor show in portable guise via headphones and was absolutely smitten. Having convinced myself over the last few years that for commuting, the soound coming out of my phone into decent shure IEM's was sufficient, I may need to rethink this. The Poly was fed via internal SD card and Mojo driving £300 KEF headphones. It was absolute bliss.
There is a bit on the Head Fi forum with folks talking about experience in main systems and with roon, so you should check in there Jon. Initial views seem to be that as an integrated streaming source it is very, very good.
I have ordered and paid for poly. Should be with me on Thursday.
Oooooooh! First one on the forum it seems
some time after you've revelled in its delightscwith Mojo it'll be interesting to see if you can find a way of trialling with a.n.other DAC.
Nice one Jon - will be interested to hear how you get on with it in your main system.
How do you actually use it to select music from an SD card ?
Edit - just scanned the WHF review. So you need a phone to control it ?
Correct James - need an app. Chord are currently recommending 8 player although their own app should be out shortly.
My Poly will be arriving imminently. Currently I have the Mojo connected to my 552 via a 3.5 to din cable from Chord Company and it all sounds rather good. Will be great to add the poly and hi res via the micro sd card shortly.
Well its arrived, but I dont have time to play. Ah well.
one micro-niggle -- the paint finish on poly doesnt quite match that on mojo, being very slightly lighter and a little more shiny
The Mojo/Poly is a good sounding bit of kit - the sound when connected to my 552/500 system is very impressive indeed.
However, it is a very fiddly thing to set up - get connected to phones or wi-fi - and at the moment I have not been able to play any aif files using recommended app 8 player, only flac.
There's a lot going on at Chord to get this right reading comments from the MD on head fi and I am a very early adopter - the Chord app is not out yet for instance.
When poly was connected to iPhone last night and using 8 player, it chewed my battery badly, but that might just be IOS 11too.
Lots of promise, some way to go for me, sounds excellent.

And that's just with Mojo! if onlyPoly were capable of connecting to Chord's other DACs...
i suspect it is a forlorn wish because they'l want to sell specialist versions for each DAC, and ignore cheapskates like me who'd like to use one device for more than one thing.

which chord cable are you using to connect it to your 552/500?
analogmusic posted:which chord cable are you using to connect it to your 552/500?
Chord made up some Chord Epic - 3.5 one end and din the other - works really well. They could not get Chord Signature into the 3.5 so this was the best cable they could do to that spec.
I dont get the Polly at all
a dap is far more convenient on the move and its not a home device
all it does replace a usb cable for a big price tag
What do i miss?
What’s a dap?

A fundamental part of the answer depends on how good it is as a renderer. If truly excellent then its price is not bad.
And coupled with Mojo, a rather excellent DAP for its cost, it is supposed to provide true hifi quality music play, including hi res play.
From a different angle, with a micro SD card it is also a music store, capacity only limited by available microSD cards ((at present up to 400GB) and, conceivably, before too long maybe as much as 1TB. My entire music collection would fit in 1TB, and as mentioned in earlier posts, the attraction to me ould be if Poly could be used with my system DAC (Dave) at home: then my entire collection could sit inside Poly, and when I do want to travel just pick it up and plug into Mojo and a pair of headphones, and I'd have all my music with me, and the same library software as familiar with at home.
