CB Naim Nait 2

Posted by: Shane. on 24 October 2017

Just got myself a CB Naim Nait 2. This example was serviced earlier this year. Only switched the unit on today. Sounds very detailed and tight. Hoping the sound will smooth a little bit more over the next few days.

My Rega Apollo-R CD Player, is connected to the AUX input......Perfect.

The Tuner and Tape inputs, I simply don't use. But when I select with the input selector knob to either of the two unused inputs, I get a humming/buzzing sound which is in sync with the volume. The buzzing gets louder as I increase volume.

No buzzing with the AUX input (CD Player). Also, the volume dial feels a tiny rough when I adjust. Feels like it's touching against the face. It's not a silent turn. I'm guessing this is normal? I'm afraid to attempt to pull the knob out a few mm! Don't get me wrong the volume works fine.

Bit of a novice with the Nait 2.

Thanks.

Have you disconnected the CD player from the Nait and tried the same test could be an earth issue.

No, I haven't done that yet.

Shane - IIRC on the old Naits, unused inputs will hum if you select them with nothing connected. Try connecting the CD player to the Tuner input - the hum should dissappear on this input and then you'll find the unconnected Aux input will hum when you select it.

Do not try pulling the knob out. (Didn't think I would  write that sentence this morning!). There is a hole in the side of the knob (Ditto) and you can insert a fine flat bladed screwdriver and undo a little the grub screw that clamps the knob to the volume control spindle. Then you can pull the knob out a little (this is getting ridiculous!) and tighten up the screw again but not too tight as the knob is plastic - just enough so that the knob does not slip on the shaft.

This is normal.  I've had about 10 Nait 2's and they've all done this.  Relax and enjoy the sound, it's a fantastic little amp

PS:  Regarding the knobs, the above information is incorrect, they do just pull off and there is no retaining grub screw.   There is only retaining grub screws on the Grey knobs used on all other amps except the Nait 1 which also has a pull off knob.

Just remove with care, reinsert and put a small piece of card behind as you slide it back on to get the spacing correct.  Hope that helps.

You are absolutely correct, my bad advice, sorry. So much for all the double entendre.

Sorry, forgot to mention I also get the same hum/buzz through the phono input.

I don't use a turntable in case if you are wondering.

Why do these old Naits hum/buzz through unused inputs? When you raise the volume the hum/buzz gets louder.

Thanks again.
