Challenges with Uniti Star

Posted by: SimonFM on 25 October 2017

Hello

My first post on the forum after many years of gleaning useful information from this great resource.

I have just upgraded from a NaimUniti / UServe to the Uniti Star.

Overall I am enjoying the sound of the Star but have struck a couple of frustrating issues with the interface and the Naim App. Hope you might be able to help me with 3 particular issues as below.

1. I wish to transfer my music from the UServe to an external drive on the Star. The Uniti Support Tool indicates that this is possible using the 'Import' function on the 'Setup\Manage Music' menu in the app. However I do not see this option. In fact I see 3 menu choices versus 8 on the animation in the support tool.

2. Once again In the Support Tool on the main display - underneath the list of different sources - a number of options are shown to browse music. 'ALBUMS , ARTIST , TRACKS, PLAYLISTS etc'. However on my system I do not see the 1st 3 options. I assume these allow you to browse all music, aggregated from various sources, which is an essential feature.

3. Accessing the Star from my PC on the network I am able to see the connected disk drive. However when I try to copy music to the download folder I get a message saying that I don't have access to this folder.

Hoping someone can assist here. Is this just symptomatic of the limitations of the app at this stage. Perhaps the Uniti Support Tool is showing the final version. Or is there some sort of issue with the way I have configured the system.

I am using System Versiob 2.3.8574 with IOS App 5.8.2.  Have had the same experience on Android as well.

There are relatively few of us here who have the Star, so you may have to wait a while until one of them sees your post. But I can say the app isn't half finished in the sense that you should expect it to do all of the things that the Support tool says it will do. Of course the app does have bugs and is in a constant state of development but even so it should work.

I suggest you give Naim support a call to ask them about your three specific points. Probably Richard Dane will be along in a moment and he is almost certain to say that!

But on your point about only seeing Albums, Artists, Tracks, are you sure there isn't a second screen with the rest. On my Core I get a second screen by swiping left and that gives me an icon saying "more". If you click on that, the other categories appear. I think this is a bug because it didn't used to hide them away like this. The Star and Core share lots of code, so may be worth looking for that.

Hello David

Thank you for your reply and guidance here.

With regard to the issue referred to. What I see on the App display is RADIO,PLAYLISTS & UPNP PLAYLISTS. The ALBUMS, ARTISTS and TRACKS options are missing. I do not see any option to display more options.

I expect that the Unit Support Tools must reflect a future final version of the APP. I hope it is not too far away.

Simon, are you looking at the home screen shortcuts for radio, playlists and UPnP playlists? Above this, the full list of available inputs should include a Server input, and this is where your stored music files should show up - once you have everything correctly set up, of course.

Ah I assumed that Simon would have selected upnp (or servers as I see Naim now call it) in the Star home screen. As you say, that is the necessary first step!

Hello

Yes. I can browse music by selecting the Server Source. However I then need to select the location for the music.

The options I am referring to can be seen at the Uniti Support Link below.

https://naim.tmtx.co.uk/en/top...ng_music.html#step=1

It seems to offer an option where you can browse music by Album, Artist or Track across all locations. This would be ideal.

I guess the query really relates to why the Uniti Support site seems to show functionality that is not present on the devices.

Simon

I think you should ring Naim support and ask them. I doubt that it's functionality that isn't yet available because where there is that, they say that's it's not available yet, see formatting a disc for example.

I suspect that when Naim say "across your music stores" they mean that and not "across all locations", but assuming you have a disc defined as a music store and or a share, then I don't see why you wouldn't get the opportunity to browse albums and artists.

Anyway when you get the answer from Naim, do please come back and tell us!

I wonder if the issue is simply that the server in your Star has yet to scan the drive(s) of your music store, including your Unitiserve. Once that is done, it should see folders with music files in them.

It won't scan unless they are defined as shares (and the one you rip to has to be set as a store, if it's anything like the Core, which it is in many respects).
