Nova - Hum

Posted by: Daveas on 29 October 2017

I got my much anticipated new Nova a couple of days ago and very good it is too. The only problem is a slight hum coming from the unit (not the speakers). It is audible from a few feet away when the Nova is on, or in standby. As  the box is put into “deep sleep” the absence of the hum is in someways when it is most noticeable, if you know what I mean. The hum is there with or without inputs or speaker connections and from different mains sockets.

I have contacted Naim and my dealer (the “hum expert” is going to contact me. I just wondered if anyone else has/had the same issue.

Nope - mine has been totally silent

Totally silent for nearly 2 months

Try turning off every other electrical device in the house and see if the hum disappears. Then turn things on one at a time and you’ll find out what is polluting the mains and causing the hum. Hopefully anyway.

No more doubt — the Nova is a proper Naim.

Mine’s totally silent as well.

Mine is silent.

Wouldn't be Naim without a bit of hum.

Sorry to hear that. Perhaps you can connect the Nova to a different socket or bring it to a different place (office, dealer, etc?) and check whether it hums everywhere or just in your current setup.

Thanks for your replies. The dealer is going to exchange the Nova.

Mine also hums - in my case I think it's DC offset on the mains. It's worse at night (after 8PM)  than at other times of the day - doesn't seem to be sourced in my house so it looks as though I'm going to have to get a DC blocker. I'm certain there's no fault with my Nova as previous (non-Naim) kit did it too.

Not happy with the thought of making my own blocker - simple enough circuit, but I don't like messing with mains voltages so it looks as though it's time to google for devices.

Have a look at Isol-8's DC blocker. Not cheap but it made my XS2 transformer shut up.

Timo - thanks, a google reveals a dealer not to far from me. That's Saturday sorted

I would consider a balanced mains unit rather than a SC blocker. Eradicated the mains hum on my 250dr and improved the sound

Most stiff transformers buzz when new, my SU did for about 3 months, plus it was ex-dem. It will not effect the sound and its not guaranteed that your replacement will not hum too, as pointed out above, it is mainly to do with DC off-set, which transformers will buzz from but over time the coils stop vibrating.

My pleasure. A good dealer should give you his demo kit for at least a week so that you can be sure that the Isol-8 fixes the problem outside your house. It's a great feeling when you know the hum is gone.

You may find that the replacement will hum but let's hope not, good luck

My Atom, 1st Nova and 2nd Nova also hum. I thought Naim always hum.

Well I have had humming boxes in the past but my new Nova is silent so far and I am very pleased with its performance - particularly now it operates through an ex-HH 250DR
