Replacement Fraim Glass
Posted by: Shropshire Hills on 31 October 2017
I hope it’s ok to post this question but can anyone suggest a suitable supplier for a replacement Fraim glass shelf. Genuine Naim shelves are expensive at £187 each and I wonder if there are any good alternatives without compromising on sonic or cosmetic quality.
Thanks
Bob
Bob, have you asked your dealer? As a valued Fraim owner, if you've broken, damaged or lost the glass, I'm sure they will try to help out.
Failing that, I believe the supplier is Pilkington.

I have had the Fraim for 7 or 8 years and a few years ago I was temporarily storing it and mistakenly caught one of the shelves on something in the loft. There is only a slight sliver of glass missing from one corner. It cannot be seen if I put the shelf so the chip is at the back nut it bugs me to have this damage.
I had decided to sell the Frame as I have downsized to a Nova and 250DR for my main system but having had no buyers I have decided it is too nice to part with and I still very much like the look of black with silver legs. I checked with Naim and that is the price they quoted. I wouldn't want to replace it with an inferior piece of glass so I may just have to ignore the slight damage or pay the list price but I live quite near to the Black Country and I wondered if anybody had found a suitable alternative source
Brownhills glass in Walsall can do the same spec as Fraim glass, including the bevel edge for c£50. Spec can be found online.
Hi Jonn
many thanks and good to hear from you again
Bob
Local glass specialist can supply toughened glass same spec for around £40 not sure why Naim charge £187 wow that's steep

maybe it sounds better
I expect there is the usual Naim handling and shipping charge plus the desler’s standard mark up and perhaps the glass is a particular spec and made specifically for Naimbut I doubt I would hear any difference
I do know that Naim went through each glass piece when they got a delivery, and there used to be quite a large reject pile at the end of it. I could never really see why because to my eyes they looked just fine, but then Naim's QA dept. has always been very discerning...
Hi Richard
I have had my Fraim for a few years and apart from periodically taking the levels off to clean and dust I have never done anything with it. I have seen your comprehensive assembly instructions in the FAQs and wonder if you recommend occasional complete dissemble and re-assembly to get maximum sonic benefit?
Bob
Bob, yes, I do recommend this. Although no need to totally disassemble, just take down each level and check the bolt tightnesses. Then clean up the steel balls and when i reassemble I do the dong/donk test on each piece of glass. I usually do a rebuild (which also means a dust, clean and check of everything in the system) every year
Richard- many thanks and sounds a good compromise - I was thinking envisaging a full day devoted to completely dissembling and reassembling my Fraim
