272 and Supercap?

Posted by: Finkfan on 03 November 2017

With a lot of talk about upgrading from XPSDR to 555 on a 272, I just wondered if anyone had tried a Supercap? I guess only half the 555 would be used on the 272 when using the one burndy connection? So how would a Supercap compare performance wise?

The Supercap won't work with the 272.

It's designed to provide multiple power rails to analogue components - pre-amps, active crossovers and phono stages and provide signal pass through. The 555 / XPS etc are more for the digital components with different power requirements.

Ah, that’ll be why no ones tried it then. Just curious as the Naim website says it will work all pre amps bar the 172.

That is correct, but N272 is not a regular pre-amp. It's a streaming amp and such requires a traditional 'source-type' PSU.

Yes the application of Naim power supplies can be slightly confusing. The 172 can't take an external supply and both the 172 and 272 could really be classed more as digital components hence the XPS/555 PS upgrade path.

The 272 website page clearly states that it can be upgraded with an XP5xs - which has been discontinued of course, XPS or 555PS.

No doubt written before the 272 was released, and not updated when it was.
