Bookshelf Monitors for UnitiQute2
Posted by: Crispin_Hill on 06 November 2017
Speaker help please! I have a UnitiQute 2. I have nSats and nSub. Unfortunately, my nSub has gone nSplat! Sub developed a “ground earth loop” and £600 to return and repair. So I’m thinking... sell the piano-black nSats and move on...
Must haves: mine is a small / medium living room. Must be placed close to rear wall. Will sit on shelf (maybe wall mount). Electronic music and vocals.
Let us say that for £700 I could buy myself as ‘used’ either:
1) Neat Petite SX
2) Rega RX1
3) PMC Twenty.21
4) Linn Kan’s Mk1 - a bit cheaper
5) Totem Rainmakers (if I can find some used ones) - a bit over budget
... if I have to, I can take the NAP150x off my DacV1 for essential oomph but I’d rather not
BTW... “Guru Juniors”: Might as well not exist anymore (went into liquidation... then made in China)
thanks!
If you like what the NSats do, why not just get another sub? Maybe a Rel of BK.
I'd look at a pair of PMC DB1i's as well. I had them on my unitiqute2, and now on a NAP150 and they're great.
PMC used to make wall mounts for them so there's that option as well.
I'd probably just keep the n-sats. I'd rather have them than the others (well ok, I do love Kans, but they can thrill and frustrate in equal measure sometimes). The n-sub is great. It must be worth getting fixed, surely? If the factory is too much, what about class A?
If I was in your situation I think I’d keep hold of the n-Sats, especially as the piano black variants are pretty rare and have the potential to go up in value if they remain in good condition.
Then if viable, get the nSub repaired (esp if finished in piano black also). But can imagine the reticence due to the hassle and cost involved.
Alternatively, perhaps a brand new B.K. Electronics sub - superb value (have a Gemini II in my AV system).
The nSats are superb with the nSub. You won't get the drive and scale from small speakers attached to the modestly powered Qute. I'd pay the £600, or whatever Class A charge, to have it fixed.
Just a thought, when I had my nSats and nSub on a Uniti it also suffered with a ground earth loop, it turned out to be a faulty power cord on the Uniti that was causing the problem so might be worth trying a different power cord on each first.

Definately will try this and if it works will update the forum. I telephoned Naim's Steve and between us we tried every single variation other than this. I even tried earthing teh sub with a dedicated cable tot eh 'earth' on a mains-socket (just the earth cable. plug switched 'off') but no. I have alternative cables to play around with - it's gotta be worth a try

Okay - maybe I'm not being fair on the nSat's. I just figured... "maybe I can save some floor space and have a pair of bookshelves with adequate bass and drive which will fo the job... do I really even NEED a Sub?... it's not like I'm watch 'Black Hawk Down' that often that I need the house to shake when the helicopter is landing...:-)". Yes my Sub is Piano Black... not quite clear the references earlier to Class A but will look at possible other subs and alternatives if any to sending this back to Naim
Class A is a Naim authorised service centre - Google 'class a naim'.
The nSub enhances all music played via the sats, even music with no obvious bass, such as solo violin. For the £600 cost of fixing the nSub you are not going to find an alternative that’s as good, nor one that will pair with the sats so prefectly.

A matching set of piano black n-Sub & n-Sats? Definitely get keep the n-Sub and get it repaired (if the cable swap doesn’t solve the earth loop). That’s a pretty rare combination!
Moderated Post: Edited. Yetizone, please respect forum rules. Thanks.
Have you tried the N-sats without the sub? If you like that stop there. (If not so good, others have made the obvious suggestion)

Oops - Sorry Richard.
BTW... “Guru Juniors”: Might as well not exist anymore (went into liquidation... then made in China)
Hi there.
As a multiple Guru owner, this is not my experience of recent events. Indeed, I've been in touch with Erik from Stockholm and things seems to be back up and running again.
Also, a friend of mine, and fellow forum member, has been shown the prototypes of the new QM60s (he has the originals in his system). The new website is http://guruaudio.com
I can certainly vouch for them at the end of the Uniti range, as can others on here.

Are they being manufactured in Sweden again? Ironically, the source of my comment here came from talking to Guru’s UK agent stayed in their website. For what it’s worth, I’d love to listen to a pair but cannot find them anywhere... except the comments on this forum.

The shop... Class A... unfortunately don’t service the Sub. The nSub must go to Salisbury

Yes they are. The Juniors, the new Qm10 Mk IIIs and the Qm60 MkIIs. Along with new speaker cable and stands. They are well worth a listen, and, given the relative rarity of the first batch, a safe bet to pass on if you are lucky enough to find a pair on an auction site. They match extremely well with my original Uniti, and now with my SU and NAP 250 (Qm10s) and I'm sure will do well with your Qute. Again, search the forum for fellow owners - they have a unique sound - not very hifi, which is to their credit.
Higher up the chain, a friend has the QM60s on the end of a 282, PS, DR250 and other bits and bobs (LP12 and also a valve pre and some Vitus gear) and he adores them.

6. Dali Mentor Menuet or the latest Menuet.
These can be placed close to the wall, wall-mounted or sit on a shelf.
I had QM10'S on a UQ great sound they do struggle at volume in larger rooms though mine blew in the end (but with a Nap 200 not UQ) I still sold them for 70% of what I paid though. I have just bought a pair of Royd Edens for £100 well £80 plus postage I remember hearing those back in the 90's and loving them but they are suited to analogue though.
