Nova - what small to medium size speakers for a big room?

Posted by: blythe on 07 November 2017

I'm considering moving my main, active NBL system into a different room.
However, I want to have a decent, but much simpler/smaller system in my current listening room.

The room measures approximately 11x7 metres (36' x 23') and I think I'm losing (lost) the argument for keeping my system in this room

The active system takes up a lot of wall space and with the large NBL's too, it's tricky to balance the furnishings/pictures etc. around everything.
A single box system and a pair of small floor standers - preferably no larger than something like Neat Elite SX or possibly a little bigger might fit the bill.

If I go the route of, for example a simple single box unit such as the Nova, what smallish speakers might enable me to fill the room with good sound?

The "new" listening room will of course require me to purchase Fraim  but I'll lose my dedicated mains supply which was installed in the current room whilst re-building the house.
However, I am not prepared to rip the heart of the house out to get a dedicated mains supply to my "new" listening room.
The ring main to that room has nothing else on it, so I'm hoping it will still be "OK".

Any thoughts on the Unit Nova and a pair of good, smallish to medium speakers in this size of room?

Audio show East, Naim were showing the new Focal Kanta, Naim naca5 powered by the Nova in a large room. Different amp but PMC were demoing 25.23 in a large room. Both speakers sounded very good. These looked to me to be medium size compared to say Kudos 707 or 808.

Suggest you google MarkAudio-Sota. Their new Viotti One is well reviewed, a good value, and sounds great in my 272/250DR based system. Available by direct order on their web site with a 30 day return policy

Thanks for the ideas so far.

I wonder?  Is anyone on here currently using one of the new Uniti  range in a large room?

I've never actually heard any PMC speakers but a lot of folk owning Naim kit seem to love them.
As someone who's familiar with Linn Kans, Royd The Minstrel SE's,  Naim SBL's, n-Sats and SL2's (for a week), and currently NBL's I'm a bit out of touch with most of the "newer" names in speakers. (OK, I know in the instance of PMC they've been around for 25 years!)
I do also own a pair of Neat Elite SX in a second system, and I like them a lot.
How do PMC present the music (generally) compared to any of the above?

I had active SBL,s many years ago, tried Kudos, Focal, Russel k, and PMC, just hit the spot, but you need to demo, as it is very personal.

I can't compare them to the above but I love my PMCs! Nova is successor to SuperUniti? Definitely try some 20.22s or something from the latest 25 range.

I'm unclear - is the new 36' x 23' smaller than the previous room? Given the large size I'm surprised at the desire to shrink the size of the boxes...

You haven't indicated a budget. PMC Fact 12 are surprisingly capable for their diminutive size, and may still cope in that size room - with adjustable response they can be tailored slightly to thevroom.

The current listening room (I haven't moved anything yet) is the 36' x 23' room. The layout of the room is such that having the main system in it makes it virtually unusable for anything else (suits me).
In essence,;
Old room = drawing room.
New room = drum room.
The new room where I'm planning on moving the system into is a similar size but with a vaulted ceiling and as it already houses my drum set already, I can do pretty much what I want with it.
I just want to keep a good system in the main drawing room once the active NBL's have moved out. Something compact, freeing up the wall space for the china cabinet (yes, I know) but something I can live with for the occasions we want music there.
Budget: I'm thinking up to £8k absolute Maximum for the streamer/amp and speakers.
I was going to say 10k but remembered I need to buy quite a lot of Fraim for the active system once moved...
