CDX2.2 placement

Posted by: damy79 on 09 November 2017

Dear all,

unfortunately I do not have the possibility to place my black boxes on a dedicated Hi-Fi rack. I have to place them on the furniture already used for TV and other stuff. The furniture is quite big (L 2100 H 520mm D 480mm) made of wood, stable and also full of big books to limit the resonance. I was thinking to use an additional base like bambù and put three soundcare spikes below.

Do you have any placement experience with CDX2.2 with additional plate, spikes, eg…?

Glas shelves, placed on VibraPods.

Naim gear is really at its best when it resides on glass.

Books will increase the mass of the shelf considerably, which I imagine would not be good.

Thank you Adam, I can try a glass shelf of 1,5/2 cm at low cost and verify what happen! Also vibrapods are quite cheap!

Adam,

with all due respect for your experience, I beg to differ. I heard a CDX2 change its sound audibly in earphones once at an audio show when taken from the plain shelf and put on some isolating pods with no glass anywhere. Unfortunately, the pods cost then around $450.

Another interesting experiment I witnessed was a rega Apollo skipping a few bits on two single and identical moments all of the times, when placed on a super-non resonant glass panel resting on pods, then resuming perfect and smooth tracking as soon as the glass was removed and the Apollo placed directly on the non resonant Guizu shelf. Same tracks, same bits.

In my opinion, FWIW, glass is never beneficial. The OP's CDX2 would benefit more from some semi-soft decouplers that isolate it from any parasite vibration from the large furniture.

Best

You could try a Quadraspire soundstage. Bamboo works very well as a rack material, so this ought to be good. It’s specifically designed to be used with heavy furniture.

With the original CDX2, I find it sounds best on full fat Fraim (Fraim with glass shelves)... however that appears not an option for you ... I used to mount my CDX2 on a wooden sideboard placed on sorbothane balls chosen for the CDX2 weight... it provided much of the  warmth and emotion of the Fraim, but lost some of the resolution, bite and clarity... but certainly a good option, especially if partnering your CDX2 with more modest quality amplification.

A poorly mounted CDX2 can make the CDP a little edgy and relentless, and some sorbothane looky-likey type products can sap all the life and timing out of the CDP.

But as I say if you can best use Naim glass on ball bearings for the CDX2, it really does transform the player.. and will be in harmony with the top end Classic series NACs (282,252,552 )

Agreed. BTW, my dealer is currently demoing the new Uniti line on Quadraspire racks, and in spite of the ubiquitous and unbearable Nordost speaker cables, everything sounds rather 'right'.

Thank you Hungryhalibut, Quadraspire Soundstage also seems interesting!!!

I found a new one at 100€ shipped! The maximum allowed weight is 10kg , my CDX2.2 is about 10,8kg. I hope this is not a problem

And thank you Adam, Chris and Simon-in-Suffolk on behalf of DAMY, who unwillingly skipped your helpful replies.

Thank you Max_B for your reply. Actually I'm not very skilled with the forum "rules" but it was not my intention to be disrespectful. Thank you to everybody guys! In my furniture configuration the Quadraspire Soundstage may integrate very well but I'd like to test also a glass shelf, the Fat Fraim would be a dream but I do not have a dedicated room and free space to place one. Anyway I should avoid to get crazy to test several option before to find the best one ????, I suppose we are talking about fine tuning and not night and day but lots of people talk about big differences.
