Is my Atom broken?

Posted by: Bryce Curdy on 11 November 2017

Finally got my Atom several weeks ago and have been very impressed.  There was quite a loud cracking sound through the left channel, however, any time it was switched on which I got round by changing the settings so that it never powered off.  My dealer advised that it should be exchanged and did so yesterday although funnily enough we could not replicate the issue.  I would actually have happily kept the old one but he insisted.  Played a bit of music last night and watched a film (I use the Atom for audio for Sky Q TV and other video sources), all seemed fine.  Came home tonight and the Atom was unresponsive to the remote control.  I disconnected at the mains and reconnected and it came up with display of inputs but the power button goes through a cycle of 4 flashes, 1 flash and 6 flashes which then repeats.  Unresponsive to any button on the unit (including power) or the remote control.  I can only turn it off at the mains.

Are you able to operate the Atom via the Naim app?

Do check that your left channel speaker connections are not shorting at the speaker (or amp) end - I once had audio dropouts on one channel hooked up to an AV amp using non-soldered speaker cable for the center channel and occasional AV amp shutdowns - I found the cable to the center channel had worked loose from the 'screw fix' banana plug enough that it was intermittently touching it's partner (metal plugs).

The new one certainly doesn't seem happy - can you factory restore via the app?

You have to reset the Atom to factory settings via the remote control, not the app.

I should give Naim a call. I believe their Uniti support is open at weekends. I bet they tell you to take it back to the dealer for exchange though.

Oops - you're correct it's Reset App in the app!

No response to Atom buttons (including power), remote control or app.

Alley Cat - thanks for advice.  My speakers are in wall but swapping left and right channel speaker cables at Atom end sends the cracking noise to the right speaker rather than left.
