cardas multi blocks to elevate burndy cables
Posted by: French Rooster on 12 November 2017
has anyone tried to elevate from the floor the burndy cables with cardas multi blocks? my burndys are touching the floor....these multi blocks are not so expensive ( 50GBP for 6)
Probably a stupid question, but is the burndy touching the back of an equipment shelf behind a box as bad as touching the floor?
Years ago I had to ask Morrissey to stop singing and Johnny to pause his guitar playing because the cables on the Manchester Free Trade hall stage were
touching and I felt this was affecting the sound.....

I was at the gig and remember that

The sound improved when the cables were unplugged?

‘Dishmatic general purpose refills’ - 6 pack £3.00 work a treat ime.

i don’t understand, sorry...6 pack of what?

I would certainly be inclined to try a DIY solution like this first, and somehow I doubt Cardas are claiming that their design or materials are critical to performance. I’m not convinced that a timber support would improve things much, as they are effectively raising the relative height of the floor, and using a rigid material to couple the cable to the floor. I would be tempted to try a soft foam material such as Armaflex pipe insulation too, and this will cost very little to try.
my floor is suspended wood, so i must elevate i think the burndys. Armaflex pipe may not be immune to vibrations from the floor.....but i am not sure....
Perhaps not completely immune, but more so than wood, I imagine.
Some other cheap/free things to try if you have the patience:
Tie the cable into a very loose loop, effectively reducing its length.
Suspend the cable from a hook or nail in the rear wall, possibly using an elastic band, dental floss or string.
good idea, i will try that. simple and logic. i can even tie the elastic band or dental floss to the rack( at the back)

Scourers.

the twilight world is that of mucking about with little blocks to suspend cables etc which is a far cry from the reality of what happens either on a stgae or in a recording studio

i don’t know if it is not better to have something hard under the burndys....but perhaps scourers, foam....will work effectively. i must try
i wanted to add that i recently decided to move away my 300 ps and 555dr from the same rack as the nds, nap 300 and preamp. The change in sound improvement was very positive, not insignificant or minor. I was very surprised!
So i said to myself: naim recommends also strongly that burndys cables don’t touch the floor and the rack: i am curious to try, perhaps it will really improve also the sound. Just some time and effort and very little cost.

So touching the rack is as bad as touching the floor? I asked the question earlier but it got drowned out by some very droll comments!

i don’t know which one is worst. I didn’t try for now to elevate my burndys and compare.
i finally choose the cardas multi blocks to elevate my burndys and my speakers cables from the floor. This tweak is a little expensive for what it is, but it looks pretty nice with my floor ( 50 GBP for 6 pieces). I didn’t want to play in dy or do it yourself ( time ...)
Did they improved the sound by elevating the burndys or speakers cables : if there is an improvement in sound, it is very minimal. I didn’t really noticed it.
But i choose to keep them: my burndys are not touching the rack, the floor or themselves, so i can say to myself that all is ok with the set up.
We, audiophiles, are sometimes a bit stupid, no?
If your floor is made of wood, and you elevate the cables on blocks, also made of wood, do you expect that to change the performance of the cables?
Try putting some felt stickies on the undersides.

It is OK, as long as we are honest enough to admit it when we do not hear any difference.
What is is that burndy dislike about being on the floor ? If that could be explained without just saying it does then we're a bit closer.
If it's from vibrations putting stresses over some time into them then those Cardas blocks are just chipper.

my floor is vibrating, suspended floor...

That’s a very good question. One downside of my new 300 is the two burndy leads. They were initially on the floor, so I bought an extra shelf so as to get the boxes a bit higher and the burndies off the floor. Even though the floor has a good carpet, it made a very audible difference. I’ve no idea why; maybe it’s vibrations, maybe strain on the connectors, goodness knows. Perhaps Naim can tell us.

naim recommends to have burndys not touching the floor. But perhaps in some cases it changes nothing really....
I followed naim advice to put the ps away the source and preamp and it really improved the sound when i did that recently. But here , with these burndys not on the floor, i don’t know.

my rack is around 3 meters from the speakers so perhaps the vibrations on the floor near the burndys are not big enough to have an incidence ? so maybe cardas blocks or floor don’t change something....
Or your extra shelf is more effective ? difficult to prove....

I don't see how wooden blocks decouple the cable from any vibrations in the wood floor they are sitting on?
I have looped my burndy with velcro cable tidy that I got at B&Q and as far as I can tell it works pretty well admittedly it probably doesn't look like the hanging vines that some forum grandees have hanging from the back of their systems but then I can't see it and so don't care.
