Network issues with new modem-router

Posted by: AndrewG on 14 November 2017

Yesterday I installed a new TP Link modem router to replace my previous unreliable one. Everything on my network is working as it should be with the exception of finding my NAS on the laptop I use for ripping CDs. On this laptop, running Windows 10, I previously had my QNAP NAS mapped as the Z drive and when ripping in DBPoweramp the files were automatically saved there. It all worked well. I assumed I would have no problems with the new router, but now the laptop cannot see the Z drive. Rather Windows tells me that Z:\ is unavailable. So I cannot connect to it from the laptop nor do any ripping in DBPoweramp. I have tried, but failed, to remap the Z drive using 'Map Network Drive'.

Fortunately I can access the NAS through the Naim app on my IPad and can therefore play my stored music. (I am using Asset). So I know that the NAS is functioning and communicating with my NDS.

I think I am doing something wrong that should be very simple. Networks have always been a mystery and Windows 10 is rather new to me. So any advice for a simpleton would be most welcome.

Many thanks.

Has your NAS a static address or DHCP?

have you rebooted it?

I guess the NAS is DHCP and has changed IP address with new router. Maybe you mapped it based on its address.

Windows has always been poor at network scanning. Use a network scanner software to browse your network. And remap your NAS.

I followed your advice and now all is well! Many thanks.

i am a scientist and thought I had a logical mind, but evidently my logic is different to that of Microsoft! I guess I'm just ignorant when it comes to networks. Thank goodness for this forum and its knowledgeable members.

Hi, well the good thing this is unlikely to be network related as your iPad can see the NAS, so all will be working fine with dhcp etc.

this is most likely a Windows10 network share setup matter.. ensure you are using the NAS name, rather than IP address .. and you should see the NAS name when your network share browser scans the network..
